Although acne can occur in both males and females, the differences in their bodies lead to different characteristics in terms of the incidence, causes, and manifestations of acne. We categorize acne into four types based on severity, which means that treatment and prevention of acne should be tailored differently for males and females.
Differences between acne in males and females
1. Incidence
A study conducted abroad showed that males have a higher incidence of acne compared to females. During puberty, the incidence in females is 90.6%, while it can reach 100% in males. This may be related to the levels of sex hormones.
Although males have a higher incidence of acne during puberty, the incidence in females becomes higher than in males during later stages of puberty. This may be related to abnormalities in the ovaries, adrenal glands, or local androgen metabolism in females, as well as factors such as facial makeup and beauty massage.
2. Causes
Research shows that male acne patients have much higher levels of androgens than females, and their skin tissues contain more synthesis of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) compared to females.
3. Severity
Clinical observations show that the severity of acne in male patients is significantly more severe than in females. Some females may only experience periodic exacerbation, and factors such as the end of menstruation can lead to the disappearance or reduction of acne.
4. Treatment
Treatment also differs between males and females. Females can use estrogen therapy, while it is not suitable for males, who usually opt for antibiotics. How to determine the severity of acne.
Classification of acne by severity
1. Mild
Clinical manifestations include scattered or multiple comedones, with a small number of inflammatory papules.
2. Moderate
It presents with mild acne and shallow pustules. The number of inflammatory skin lesions is higher and is limited to the face.
3. Severe
It exhibits moderate acne with deep inflammatory nodules, occurring on the face, neck, and chest.
4. Severe with conglobate acne
It shows severe acne with cysts and is prone to scarring. It occurs on the upper body and may have three or more nodules and cysts.
