Unlocking the Power of Acupressure: Five Points for Lowering Blood Pressure

January 27, 2024

We are no strangers to high blood pressure, which has become the biggest threat to our health. Many people are suffering from it. High blood pressure has great harm to the body, especially for the elderly, as it can easily lead to complications such as stroke and heart attack. Do you know that the human body actually has five acupressure points for lowering blood pressure?

1. Taichong Point

Taichong Point is located on the outer side of the distal end of the big toe, about 2 millimeters from the corner of the toenail. Taichong Point is the well point of the liver meridian. "Well" means the source. This acupoint is the first point on the liver meridian and is closely related to emotions. When blood pressure is high, you can press and massage the Taichong Point on the toes to lower blood pressure. This is called "treating headaches by massaging the feet and treating high blood pressure by massaging the feet".

Method: Gently hold the toes of the left foot with your left hand, with four fingers underneath and the thumb on top. Bend the thumb and use the tip of the nail to vertically pinch and press the acupoint. If you feel a tingling sensation, do it on the left foot first, then the right foot. Press and massage each side of the acupoint for 3 to 5 minutes every day.

2. Yongquan Point

The Yongquan Point is located on the sole of the foot, in the depression at the anterior one-third and posterior two-thirds intersection of the line connecting the heads of the second and third toe creases when the foot is curled.

Method: Use the palms to massage. Rub both hands together to warm them up, and then massage the soles of the feet. You can also use an acupressure tool instead of your fingers. Hold one end of the acupressure tool with your right hand, align it with the acupoint, and gently exert pressure until you feel a strong tingling and swelling sensation on the sole of the foot.

3. Taichong Point

Taichong Point is a famous "qi-regulating acupoint" located on the dorsal side of the foot, in the depression before the junction of the first and second metatarsal bones. It is the most important acupoint on the liver meridian and has a dual function of supplementing deficiency and draining excess. When there is excessive liver fire, massaging this acupoint can regulate the liver, relieve stagnation, promote blood circulation, and clear the liver and gallbladder. When there is insufficient liver yin, massaging this acupoint can stimulate the flow of qi and blood in the liver meridian, improve blood supply to the heart.

Method: When massaging, sit down and use the thumb fingertip to press and move up along the depression between the first and second metatarsal joints of the foot, about 3 centimeters away from the dorsum of the foot. If there is a tingling and swelling sensation during the press, it is the right intensity. If pressing it feels painful, it indicates excessive liver qi in the patient, and they are prone to anger. If the patient is more irritable, it is better to use scraping on the acupoint with a horn or spoon to produce a purplish-blue sha on the local skin.

4. Qiaogong Point

The Qiaogong Point is located on the large tendons on both sides of the neck. You can feel it when moving the head left and right.

Method: Use the palm to slowly stroke from top to bottom, and each side can be stroked thirty to fifty times. Qiaogong Point is the carotid sinus. Stimulation of this acupoint can lower blood pressure. The hands should alternate and not be done simultaneously, otherwise it may cause reflexive hypotension.

5. Ear Back Groove

Traditional Chinese medicine has found that pressing and massaging the ear back groove helps to lower blood pressure. Therefore, this groove is also called the "blood pressure-lowering groove". If you feel uncomfortable with high blood pressure, you can press and massage this acupoint.

High blood pressure is mostly caused by excessive liver yang. By stimulating the acupoints of the liver and gallbladder meridians in the ear, it can clear the liver and gallbladder, reduce liver heat, and stabilize blood pressure.

Here, we remind everyone that one key point in lowering blood pressure is to relax. Mental tension and excessive fatigue are the most common causes of high blood pressure. Maintaining a good mood every day is the best medicine.
