Skincare Measures for Acne: Tips for Clearing and Preventing Breakouts

January 20, 2024

Acne, also known as acne vulgaris, pimples, or zits, is the most common inflammatory skin condition in adolescents. The causes of acne are complex and can be divided into two categories: external factors and internal factors. Internal factors include excessive secretion of androgens, menstrual cycles in females, underlying medical conditions or hormonal imbalances, mental stress, excessive fatigue, lack of sleep, consumption of oily, spicy, and irritating foods, as well as sweets, etc.

External factors include improper cleansing leading to clogged pores and bacterial infection, improper squeezing or picking causing bacterial infection, use of low-quality cosmetics, exposure to ultraviolet rays and certain chemicals, etc.

For individuals with acne, as long as they actively identify the causes of their condition and receive appropriate treatment, the resolution of skin lesions is not difficult. It is important to take necessary skincare measures before and after treatment to prevent exacerbation and recurrence. So, what skincare measures should be taken at home?

(1) Clean the skin: Considering the greasy nature of the patient's skin, alternate the use of neutral slightly alkaline soap and facial cleanser specifically designed for oily skin in the morning and before bed. Gently massage the face in the direction of the skin's texture for 3-5 minutes using the fingertips to enhance the cleansing power of the soap and facial cleanser. Then rinse with warm or lukewarm water to thoroughly remove dust and oil from the skin. If there is a lot of dust or grease on the face, it should be promptly washed with warm water. Generally, washing the face 2-3 times a day is recommended.

(2) Clear the pores: When blackheads appear on the face, fill a basin with hot water and place the face, which has been cleansed with facial cleanser or scrub, in the rising steam. Then wrap the face with a large towel for 3 minutes to open the pores. After that, gently press the surrounding skin of the blackhead with a sterilized medical injection needle cap or comedone extractor (size 5-7) that has been disinfected with 75% alcohol to squeeze out the blackhead. This method is less likely to damage the surrounding skin and cause scars.

(3) Avoid using oil-based or powdery cosmetics and use water-based skincare products as needed, especially avoiding heavy makeup. Thoroughly remove makeup before bed and avoid applying nourishing creams or ointments before sleep to allow the skin to relax, breathe fully during the night.

(4) Avoid touching the existing acne with hands frequently or covering the rash with hair or foundation cream. Especially, it is important to overcome the bad habit of squeezing or pressing acne with hands since the bacteria on the hands and dirt on the hair can easily infect the skin and worsen acne. Improper squeezing or pressing can cause permanent atrophic scars, leaving a lifelong regret.

(5) Eat less fatty, high-sugar, spicy, and fried foods, as well as drink less white wine, coffee, and other stimulating beverages. Eat more vegetables and fruits and drink plenty of water.

(6) Maintain regular exercise to accelerate blood circulation, facilitate the timely elimination of waste products from the body, keep the pores clear during the continuous sweating process, and promptly cleanse the skin afterwards.
