Understanding Your Skin: Types and Characteristics

January 19, 2024

Beautiful and healthy skin is the dream of every woman. Only by understanding our own skin type can we take targeted care of our skin and find the best skincare routine for ourselves. So what does truly healthy skin look like? How many common skin types are there? Let's take a look together.

Criteria for judging healthy skin

1. Fine texture

Smooth skin texture is the primary condition for healthy and beautiful skin. Although the thickness of the skin texture is natural, with the correct and sufficient care, the skin can become firm and even make naturally rough skin become smooth.

2. Moisture

Moisture, neither dry nor oily, and the ability to maintain normal water content are the signs of high-quality skin. If the skin is often oily or dry and peeling, it means that the moisture level is not good. It is a reminder for you to take necessary hydration measures.

3. Radiance and elasticity

Healthy skin has radiance and elasticity. The radiance of the skin is closely related to the amount of water in the epidermis and dermis. If your skin looks dull and lacks elasticity, the priority is to replenish the water and nutrients in the epidermal keratin layer to restore the skin's elasticity.

4. Skin tone

For Asians, a healthy skin tone should resemble ivory. If your skin tends to be yellowish or has dark pigmentation due to sun exposure, it is necessary to take care of the skin's base. Otherwise, the longer the duration, the more difficult the recovery.

Common skin types

1. Dry skin

Dry skin is thin and more prone to sunburn. The moisture content in the skin's keratin layer is less than 10%, and sebum secretion is low. Dryness and dehydration are common, especially in dry climates. Occasionally, there may be peeling and redness. Wrinkles are more likely to appear around the eyes and lips. There are few pimples and acne, and the pores are not prominent.

2. Oily skin

The skin produces abundant sebum. Generally, the face will become oily again about half an hour after cleaning, and it is more obvious in the T-zone. However, in extremely cold weather, it is prone to dehydration. It is prone to pimples and acne, and the pores are larger. The advantage of this skin type is that wrinkles are less likely to appear.

3. Normal skin

This is the healthiest skin type. The skin's oil and water secretion are balanced, neither dry nor oily. The skin is smooth and elastic, able to resist seasonal changes. It is the ideal skin type.

4. Combination skin

It has the characteristics of both dry and oily skin. The T-zone is prone to oiliness, while other areas tend to be dry. Most Asians have this skin type.

5. Sensitive skin

This is the type of skin that requires the most protection. It is sensitive to changes in climate and easily becomes uncomfortable due to external stimuli. When encountering seasonal changes or sudden cold or hot temperatures, the skin may become red or develop small bumps. The skin's outer layer is thin, and occasional redness may occur.

Different skin types have different skincare needs. Everyone's skin is a complex combination, but as long as we understand our skin type and the issues we face, we can easily find the most suitable skincare methods for ourselves.
