The Impact of Sighing on Health and Well-being in Traditional Chinese Medicine

January 17, 2024

There is a saying in folk culture: "One sighs for three years." The elderly are very resentful of those who sigh all day long. Sighing is indeed a negative behavior, but many white-collar workers naturally sigh when they are mentally and physically tired. From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, sighing reflects a problem in the body.

Problem

1. Sighing in traditional Chinese medicine is called "shan tai xi", which refers to a symptom where the patient feels chest tightness and feels relieved by exhaling deeply. This may be due to liver depression.

2. Long-term sighing gradually forms a psychological suggestion, which can make a person become pessimistic.

3. It makes people around you think that you have long-term doubts in your mind.

Specific Symptoms

Chest tightness, long sighing, bloating in the ribs, silent expression, bitter taste, dizziness, white tongue coating.

Methods

1. Soaking in a bath with Buddha's hand, rose, green calyx plum, jasmine, mint, and xiang fu can help regulate qi. Alternatively, you can choose to take Xiaoyao Pill or Chaihu Shugan Powder to soothe the liver, regulate qi, and resolve depression.

2. Massaging acupoints such as Taichong, Shanzhong, and Neiguan can help relieve chest tightness. Taichong acupoint is an important acupoint on the liver meridian and has similar effects to the traditional Chinese herb chrysanthemum, such as lowering blood pressure, clearing liver heat, and improving vision. It is also worth mentioning that it is very effective for women with irregular menstruation. Therefore, stimulating it can help soothe the liver, resolve depression, and reduce excessive liver fire.

3. 9-11 pm is the period when the liver meridian's qi is most active. Soaking your feet in hot water at this time and then massaging both sides of Taichong acupoint for 5 minutes each, until you feel soreness or distension, can help. Rotate your right foot clockwise and your left foot counterclockwise while massaging. Persisting for a period of time will gradually alleviate the symptoms of liver qi stagnation.

In fact, sighing is a bad habit that can make you look dull and make others feel uncomfortable. Therefore, it is recommended that you try not to sigh frequently.
