Proper Storage Techniques for Preserving the Nutritional Benefits of Honey

January 13, 2024

Honey is a type of honey brewed by bees in their hives from the nectar they collect from flowering plants. The health benefits of honey are gaining more and more attention and recognition. In the summer, when the temperature is high and humidity is high, honey can absorb moisture from the air and spoil at high temperatures. In order to maximize the nutritional benefits of honey, it is necessary to store it correctly. So how should honey be stored? Let's find out together:

1. Seal for storage

Generally, the honey we eat at home is bottled. We pour out a little bit each time, then cover it and store it. However, the lid does not have any effective sealing measures, so air and bacteria can easily enter. Therefore, when choosing honey, you can choose small jars that can be finished in a few days, or buy small packets that can be consumed in one go. If unfortunately you bought a large jar, don't worry, just buy a roll of plastic wrap. After each use, cover the lid and wrap the bottle neck with plastic wrap.

2. Ginger slices to prevent spoilage

To keep honey from spoiling and changing in taste for a long time, you can add some ginger slices to the honey. The method is as follows: choose pure honey without impurities, put it in a clean glass bottle or ceramic jar, and then add a small piece of ginger to every 500 grams of honey. Seal it and store it in a cool place, and it will remain fresh for a long time without spoiling.

      3. Suitable storage material

Do not store honey in ordinary metal containers. It can be stored in utensils made of stainless steel, glass, ceramics, non-toxic plastic, and other materials. Honey has the characteristics of water absorption and odor absorption, so it should be stored in a sealed container in a dry, well-ventilated, odor-free environment.

      4. Cold water storage

Put the bottled honey into a bag, seal it tightly, and make sure it doesn't leak water. Then, fill a suitable-sized basin with water and place it in a cool place. Finally, put the honey into the water. If you live in the countryside and have a well, you can put the honey in the well, which is very effective in preserving the honey without crystallization. This method is also used to preserve fresh milk in rural dairy farms.

In the spring and summer seasons, it is relatively dry. It is recommended to occasionally drink some honey water. Generally, drinking honey water is easier to absorb than directly consuming honey, but it should be mixed with warm water or cold boiled water. Boiling water can destroy the nutritional components of honey. Drinking honey water regularly can have antioxidant effects and slow down skin aging. In the summer, drinking honey with cold boiled water can also relieve heat.
