The Health Risks of Using a Single Cloth for Everything

January 13, 2024

Whether in ancient times or in modern times, a cloth is an essential cleaning tool in people's daily lives. No matter how advanced technology is and how much the standard of living has improved, every household still relies on a cloth. Due to the special function of a cloth, it is destined to have significant health risks and become a major source of pollution in the household environment. Many people like to use a cloth to clean everything, wiping bookcases, doors and windows, TV, refrigerator, and even kitchen utensils. Sometimes, they even use the same cloth to wipe freshly washed fruits. Some housewives also use a cloth to wipe their children's hands and noses. It is clear that this "all-purpose" cloth is not suitable.

Using one cloth to clean everything is an unhygienic habit and can easily lead to "moving pollutants" and "cross-infection." Especially when the cloth is not properly stored, it is more prone to bacterial infection. Under favorable conditions such as suitable temperature and humidity, it becomes an ideal breeding ground for various bacteria, viruses, and pathogenic microorganisms.

Some tests have found that a cloth can have up to 5 million Staphylococcus aureus and 2 million Escherichia coli. To change the bad habit of using one cloth for multiple purposes and cleaning everything, it is best to use different fabrics or different colored cloths to differentiate their uses. The cloth that comes into contact with utensils should not be used for other purposes. Used cloths and cloths ready to be used should be separated. Do not stack them to prevent bacterial growth. Do not place the cloth in a damp and dark corner, but instead, dry it promptly and place it in a well-ventilated area. Regular boiling and disinfection of the cloth are also important. The most important point is to pay attention to the cleanliness of the cloth and change the concept of using a "universal" cloth.

Editor's Note:

Braised prawns and crispy lamb chops are popular delicacies among many people. Many restaurants provide disposable plastic gloves for customers to use during their meals, which is considered convenient and hygienic. However, it is still advisable to use caution when using such disposable gloves. Many of these gloves are "three-no" products and have significant hygiene risks. In fact, washing hands with soap or hand sanitizer before meals is more reassuring than using gloves.
