The Healing Power of Greenery: Promoting Mental and Physical Well-being

January 11, 2024

In today's rapidly developing industrial society, people are becoming more and more aware of the importance of greening. Greenery can help alleviate visual fatigue caused by long-term use of the eyes. When feeling tired at work, looking at the greenery outside the window can instantly improve one's mood. This is because when green occupies about 25% of a person's field of vision, it creates the most comfortable psychological state. Greenery has a positive impact on people's mental health, which is something many individuals have experienced.

Being in a beautiful green environment can create a healthy atmosphere for both body and mind. When feeling tired, anxious, or depressed, taking a break near flowers and lawns, or walking along tree-lined paths, often brings a sense of peace and revitalization, helping to forget worries and eliminate negative thoughts, promoting optimism and positivity. Looking at green plants is also beneficial for eyesight, as they have a regulating effect on the brain cortex and retinal tissue.

Greenery also acts as a barrier against noise. Noise has a significant impact on human health, and when the sound level exceeds a certain decibel, it can cause damage to the brain and heart. Therefore, noise is considered one of the three major global public health hazards. However, tree branches and leaves effectively reflect and absorb harmful sound waves, greatly reducing noise levels.

Greenery also plays a role in windbreak and dust reduction. Data shows that the annual amount of dust deposited on Earth ranges from 10 to 37 million tons. This dust is a major cause of respiratory diseases such as bronchitis, pneumoconiosis, and silicosis. When people inhale a large amount of dusty air, the dust settles in the respiratory system, leading to pathological changes. Trees and grass can slow down wind speed and prevent dust from flying. Measurements have shown that streets with greenery in cities have 56.7% less dust content compared to those without.

Greenery also has a calming effect and helps maintain stable blood pressure. Research has shown that green color can relax the nervous system and stabilize mood. When surrounded by greenery, skin temperature decreases and heart rate decreases, promoting a sense of calmness.

Greenery also reduces the number of bacteria in the air. This is because most plants secrete a substance called phytoncide during their growth, which directly acts on harmful bacteria in the air, reducing their quantity and protecting human health to a certain extent.

Greenery contributes to long life and is beneficial to human health. Therefore, we should plant more trees, flowers, and other green plants to maintain ecological balance.

Editor's Note:

People can cultivate plants in their homes according to their preferences. This not only beautifies the living environment and regulates the indoor climate but also cultivates people's temperament, benefiting their physical and mental health. It can also prevent and treat diseases and promote longevity. In the midst of a busy work schedule, admiring flowers can lower skin temperature, reduce average pulse rate, stabilize breathing, slow down blood flow, and ultimately relieve the burden on the heart, resulting in relaxation of the nerves and elimination of fatigue. For those with a gloomy and anxious mood, appreciating flowers and their fragrance can bring a sense of joy, helping to forget worries and sorrows.
