Air Conditioning Sickness: The Discomfort of Cool Summer Nights

January 8, 2024

In the hot summer, the heat is intolerable. People often want a cool summer, so electric fans and air conditioners have become people's first choice in summer. The hot summer nights make people feel restless, and many people sleep with fans or air conditioners on. Although this can make people sleep comfortably, it can also cause some "discomfort", which is now commonly known as air-conditioning sickness.

The main symptoms are headache, dizziness, leg weakness, and general discomfort. In severe cases, it may also trigger other diseases.

Why is this more comfortable sleeping method harmful to the body? This is because if the fan blows for too long, it will disturb the balance of sweating. Sleeping with a fan in the summer night makes it easier to catch a cold. After falling asleep, the muscles of the body are in a relaxed state, and the capillaries expand, and the sweat pores open. If the cold air from the fan or air conditioner blows at this time, it is natural to catch a cold or have a stomachache.

In summer, the elderly and children should pay more attention as their physical condition and resistance are relatively weaker than adults. Due to the slow metabolism of the elderly, they have a lower sensitivity to temperature. If they use fans for a long time in pursuit of cooling, it may cause a decline in immune system function and make them prone to "shoulder wind", "facial nerve paralysis", and "fan" diseases. At the same time, the chance of "heatstroke" and "respiratory infections" will also increase significantly. If a fan blows on a child for a long time, it can also cause certain harm to the child's body. When the wind blows on the surface of the body, sweat evaporates quickly. In areas where the wind doesn't blow, sweat evaporates slowly. This disrupts the balance of sweat excretion on the surface of the body. If the fan blows directly on the child's head for a long time, it may cause constriction and spasm of the blood vessels around the facial nerves, leading to hypoxia and facial nerve paralysis.

So, how should we scientifically use fans or air conditioners in the face of hot summer days? First, let the fan's head rotate so that the airflow is not fixed at one point, forming a breeze. Similarly, when using an air conditioner, adjust the angle of the air outlet, and the blowing time should not be too long. The air volume should not be too high. Second, choose a suitable place indoors to place the fan, which facilitates air circulation and creates a natural environment, which helps promote body heat dissipation. It is also important to note that the fan should not be too close to people and should not blow directly at people. When infants and young children have wet clothes due to urine or excessive sweating, wipe the sweat first, change clothes, and then turn on the fan. Otherwise, it is easy to catch a cold.

Editor's Note:

Considering various factors, fans are still essential in households. Fans not only provide relief from heat but also promote mental and physical well-being. Many elderly people prefer using hand fans. Using hand fans can stimulate hand movements and be closely related to brain function. Research has found that more than 65% of cerebral hemorrhages occur in the right hemisphere of the brain, causing left-sided paralysis. This is because most people only use their right hand, resulting in weak blood vessels in the right hemisphere of the brain, which controls left-sided movements, due to lack of effective exercise. Elderly people who use hand fans in summer can improve the flexibility of the left side of the body, reduce disuse contractions, and exercise and strengthen the elasticity and toughness of the blood vessels in the right hemisphere of the brain, effectively preventing and reducing the occurrence of cerebral hemorrhages.
