The Impact of Sighing on Physical and Mental Health: A Traditional Chinese Medicine Perspective

January 7, 2024

There is a saying in folk culture: "One sighs for three years." Older people are very opposed to those who sigh all day long. Sighing is indeed a bad behavior, but many white-collar workers naturally sigh when they are physically and mentally exhausted. From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, sighing reflects a problem in the body.

Problem

 1. Sighing, known as "Sha Tai Xi" in traditional Chinese medicine, refers to a symptom where the patient feels chest tightness and feels relieved when exhaling loudly. This may indicate liver congestion.

 2. Long-term sighing gradually forms a psychological suggestion, making a person less optimistic.

 3. It makes people around you think that you have long-term doubts in your mind.

Specific Symptoms

Chest tightness, long sighs, distention in the ribs, silent expression, bitter taste in the mouth, dizziness, and a white tongue coating.

Methods

 1. Soaking and drinking Buddha's hand, rose, green calyx plum, jasmine, mint, and cyperus can also help regulate qi. Alternatively, choose Xiaoyao Pills or Chaihu Shugan Powder to regulate liver qi and relieve depression.

 2. Massage acupoints such as Taichong, Shanzhong, and Neiguan can help relax the chest and regulate qi. Taichong acupoint belongs to the liver meridian and is the most important acupoint on the liver meridian. It can lower blood pressure, clear liver heat, and improve vision. Its effect is very similar to that of the Chinese herb chrysanthemum. Stimulating it can soothe the liver and relieve depression, and it can also lower excessive liver fire.

 3. 9-11 pm is the time when the liver meridian is most active. Every day during this time, soak your feet in hot water and then massage both sides of Taichong acupoint for 5 minutes until you feel soreness or swelling. Rotate the right foot clockwise and the left foot counterclockwise while massaging. If you persist for a period of time, the symptoms of liver qi stagnation will gradually disappear.

In fact, sighing is a bad habit that makes you look tired and others feel uncomfortable. Therefore, it is recommended not to sigh frequently.
