Are Double-Yolk Eggs More Nutritious? Exploring the Truth

December 30, 2023

Eggs are widely recognized as a nutritious breakfast option. But what about double-yolk eggs? Are they even more nutritious? Let's find out together!

How many eggs should you eat per day?

The question of how many eggs one can eat per day has always been a debate among people.

An egg weighs about 50-60 grams and contains approximately 290 milligrams of cholesterol.

The daily recommended intake of cholesterol for a normal person is not more than 300 milligrams. So, under a balanced diet, consuming one egg per day can meet the body's need for cholesterol without causing excess.

It is important to note that when eating eggs for breakfast, it should be accompanied by carbohydrate-rich grains. Eggs have a very low carbohydrate content, which can even be ignored.

The brain cells, blood cells, and nerve cells in the human body can only use glucose, the metabolic product of carbohydrates, as the sole source of energy.

Eggs should be consumed with staple foods to ensure the supply of energy, protein, and nutrients such as fat that the body needs for activities.

  Is double-yolk egg more nutritious?

Many people have a special preference for double-yolk eggs, believing that they are more nutritious. They often reserve double-yolk eggs for older people or children.

The occurrence of double-yolk eggs is believed to be due to the vigorous reproductive function of laying hens, which leads to excessive secretion of follicle-stimulating hormone and ovulation-inducing hormone.

On the other hand, it is believed to be a result of genetic factors. Some also attribute it to improper breeding, which causes poultry to panic, run and fly wildly, resulting in increased abdominal pressure and the rupture of "follicular fissures," leading to the release of two or more egg yolks.

However, in terms of nutrition, egg whites mainly contain water and protein. Egg yolks mainly contain yolk phosphoproteins, lipid yolk phosphoproteins, fat, cholesterol, vitamins, and minerals.

Although the nutritional value of eggs mainly lies in the yolk, it does not necessarily mean that double-yolk eggs are more nutritious. We should not blindly believe in some hype.

  Who should not eat eggs?

  (1) Some people lack certain enzymes in their bodies, which can lead to chronic food allergies when consuming eggs. They not only cannot absorb nutrients but also can cause immune disorders and even more serious diseases.

Therefore, in infancy, simple food intolerance tests can be conducted to determine which foods are not absorbed. This can avoid unnecessary feeding during the growth and development stage, so as not to miss the best time for nutrient absorption.

  (2) In addition, when the body is feverish, infected, or in an immunocompromised state, it is also not advisable to eat eggs. Instead, one should consume easily digestible vegetables, porridge, and so on.

Gout is related to abnormal purine metabolism, and gout patients should avoid eating high-purine foods. Eggs themselves have a relatively low purine content and can be eaten during the relief period, but they should not be consumed excessively during acute attacks.
