Relieving Abdominal Pain in Gastroenteritis: A Look at Acupressure Points

December 27, 2023

What to do if you have severe abdominal pain with gastroenteritis?

For some gastroenteritis that has a sudden onset, patients often experience discomfort in the abdomen, which can lead to nausea and vomiting. How can we temporarily and quickly relieve these symptoms in a simple way? Acupressure, a method in traditional Chinese medicine, can help achieve this. Today, let's take a look at three acupressure points that can quickly alleviate abdominal discomfort.

Stomach

※ What to do with gastroenteritis ※

1. Take 30 grams of white onion and 30 grams of ginger, mash them, add 300 milliliters of water, boil for 30 minutes. Dip your index finger in the liquid while it is still hot, and rub it on the palm side of the base of the patient's thumb and little finger, rubbing outward 12 times, and then rubbing inward on the Neiguan acupoint (6.6 centimeters above the wrist crease, between the long palm tendon and the radial flexor muscle) and the upper arm, each for 12 times. Repeat 1-2 times a day for 2-3 days.

Acupoint

2. Laogong acupoint (located where the middle finger points when making a fist) is near a point called "Stomach and Intestine Point". If you consider your hand as a miniature representation of a person, then the "Stomach and Intestine Point" is your stomach. It is known to have remarkable effects on patients with functional acute gastroenteritis.

Laogong

3. Hegu acupoint is located on the back of the hand, between the first and second metacarpal bones, about the midpoint on the radial side of the second metacarpal bone. Press the acupoint on the opposite side with your thumb and apply pressure towards the index finger. It has a significant relieving effect on abdominal pain and other discomfort symptoms of acute gastroenteritis. It can also suppress vomiting and dizziness.

Hegu

The Neiguan acupoint, Laogong acupoint, and Hegu acupoint can effectively alleviate abdominal discomfort symptoms during acute onset of gastroenteritis. However, the relief is only temporary. When patients have gastroenteritis, they should still seek timely medical treatment for a complete cure!
