The Importance of Choosing the Right Utensils for Traditional Chinese Medicine Decoction

December 24, 2023

Traditional Chinese medicine decoction utensils have always emphasized the use of sand pots or earthen pots, because sand pots have even and gentle heat transfer, and can withstand high heat. Medicinal ingredients can be fully heated and dissolved in the pot. At the same time, sand pots are inexpensive and economically affordable. Most importantly, sand pots or earthen pots are made of silicate materials, which have stable chemical properties. They will not affect the synthesis and dissolution of Chinese medicine in the complex chemical reactions during decoction, and can produce high-quality medicinal liquid.

Disadvantages of Sand Pots

Sand pots also have disadvantages. They are prone to breakage and can crack and leak water when overheated. Therefore, many people now choose enamel or stainless steel pots for decoction, which is also acceptable.

Avoid Using Iron Utensils

It is particularly important to note that iron utensils, such as iron pots, should be avoided for decoction. Iron pots have extremely unstable chemical properties and are easily oxidized. Meanwhile, the chemical components contained in Chinese medicine are very complex. Almost all Chinese medicine formulas contain fresh substances, flavonoids, glycosides, organic acids, and other components. These components can react with iron, resulting in the formation of insoluble complexes, which can affect the therapeutic effect of Chinese medicine. In severe cases, the medicinal liquid can produce deep purple or dark green precipitates, leading to nausea, vomiting, and other adverse reactions.

Avoid Using Copper Pots

Using copper pots for decoction is also not allowed, as copper pots can release trace amounts of copper during decoction, which can chemically react with some components of Chinese medicine and produce copper green (basic copper carbonate), which is harmful to the human body.

In summary, it is best to use sand pots for decoction, followed by enamel or stainless steel pots. Iron pots, copper pots, or other metal utensils should never be used for decoction.
