Signs of Spleen Deficiency: Recognizing the Symptoms

December 23, 2023

In daily life, many people may experience symptoms of spleen deficiency, but most people with these symptoms are not aware that they actually have spleen deficiency. Below, I will introduce several symptoms that may occur when the body is spleen deficient.

1. Changes in tongue coating

The changes in the tongue are external manifestations of spleen deficiency. A healthy tongue should be red and appear moist. The surface of the tongue has a thin layer of coating, which is light and very clean. If there are obvious tooth marks on the edge of the tongue, it indicates a problem with the body's function.

If the tongue coating is thick and white, and appears smooth and moist, it indicates coldness in the body. If the tongue coating is rough or thick, yellow, and greasy, it indicates damp-heat in the body. If the tongue is red without coating, it indicates that the body has reached a certain degree of heat and has damaged the yin. At the same time, in the summer, people with spleen dampness often feel sticky mouth and have a dull, yellowish complexion.

2. Decreased appetite

According to traditional Chinese medicine theory, when dampness enters the body, it is most likely to damage the spleen. The main function of the spleen is to digest and absorb various foods and liquids that enter the body and convert them into usable nutrients, providing new energy for the body's metabolism.

Most people experience decreased appetite and digestive functions in a damp and hot environment in summer. However, some people's appetite is not affected and they have a strong feeling of hunger, but they feel bloated after eating. This is also a manifestation of a strong stomach and weak spleen.

3. Discomfort in the morning

If you feel chest tightness, shortness of breath, dizziness, and swollen head when you wake up in the morning, it indicates that your spleen and stomach functions are weak.

According to traditional Chinese medicine, when the spleen is weak, the lung Qi is the first to be affected. This means that the functions of the spleen and lungs influence each other. When the spleen is deficient to a certain extent, the nourishment of the lung metal weakens, which can easily lead to shortness of breath and other symptoms of lung Qi deficiency.

4. Body obesity

90% of obese people are weak in constitution. Physical weakness is caused by the weakening and decline of the spleen and stomach functions. Physical weakness can lead to a slowdown in metabolism and a decrease in body vitality, resulting in a reduced ability to consume nutrients. As a result, nutrients accumulate in the body, leading to obesity.

5. Drooling during sleep

People with spleen deficiency may experience memory loss and feel dizzy, with poor sleep quality. Many people drool during sleep, which is also related to spleen deficiency. According to traditional Chinese medicine, saliva is the fluid of the spleen, and under normal circumstances, it should not overflow. Only when the spleen is deficient and unable to receive and control the fluids, will the phenomenon of drooling during sleep occur.

Editor's note: If you have these symptoms, it means that you are really spleen deficient and it is time to take good care of yourself.
