Choosing the Right Foods for Hypertension: Warm, Cold, and Neutral Options

December 22, 2023

There are not many foods with clear antihypertensive effects. The most obvious one may be celery, but many foods may be beneficial for hypertensive patients. However, it is important to choose and use them in moderation. Yang-deficiency patients should consume warm foods, while yang-excess patients should use cold foods that clear heat.

(1) Warm foods:

Wheat, alcohol, mutton, dog meat, beef, scallion, garlic, ginger, leek, mustard greens, carrot, pepper, longan, lychee, peach, jujube, umeboshi, orange.

(2) Cold foods:

Buckwheat, green beans, tofu, fermented black beans, soy milk, duck meat, eggs, sea cucumber, seaweed, crab, turtle, kelp, cabbage, celery, spinach, eggplant, cattail, lily, guanggan, chouzi, pear, watermelon.

(3) Neutral foods:

Rice, polished rice, soybeans, pork, rabbit meat, carp, squid, pumpkin, bottle gourd, tomato, mushroom, lotus seeds, lotus root, apple, peanuts, grapes, etc.

However, it must be remembered that these are foods, not medications, and their effects may vary from person to person. Eating too much may be harmful, while eating in moderation may be beneficial. The principle is to have a diversified diet and not to stick to one type of food for a long time. However, certain ingredients can be used as staple foods.
