The Evolution and Effects of Traditional Chinese Massage Techniques

Massage techniques originated from the ancient human production and life practice. In the long-term practice, massage techniques have evolved from simple subconscious movements to a highly skilled medical exercise that requires rigorous training to master. It has become a unique therapeutic and health care method in Traditional Chinese Medicine.


1. Finger Zen Technique

It uses the tip of the thumb or fingerprint to exert force, and uses the wrist's back and forth swinging to continuously apply pressure to the body or acupoints. This technique is called Finger Zen Technique and is representative of the Finger Zen Massage School.

Effect:

It is mainly used for headaches, insomnia, facial paralysis, myopia, neck and shoulder pain, coronary heart disease, lower back pain, diarrhea, constipation, irregular menstruation, joint pain, etc.

2. Kneading Technique

It uses the back of the hand to adhere to the surface of the body and uses the movement of the wrist joint and the rotation of the forearm to continuously roll on the treatment area. This technique is called Kneading Technique and is representative of the Kneading Massage School. It stimulates in a mild and comfortable way, making it safe and easily accepted by people. It has good adjustment effects.

Effect:

Kneading Technique is widely used in massage therapy. It is mainly suitable for cervical spondylosis, frozen shoulder, lumbar disc herniation, hemiplegia, hypertension, diabetes, dysmenorrhea, irregular menstruation, etc.


3. Rubbing Technique

It uses the palm, thenar eminence, full palm, or fingertip to apply gentle and slow up and down, left and right, or circular movements. This technique is called Rubbing Technique. Rubbing Technique is one of the commonly used massage techniques, and it can be divided into palm rubbing and finger rubbing according to the different contact surfaces.

Effect:

It is mainly used for abdominal pain, chest tightness, constipation, diarrhea, headaches, dizziness, pediatric diseases, etc. It can also be used for facial and abdominal health care.

4. Friction Technique

It uses the fingers or palms to make circular or back-and-forth friction movements on the body surface. This technique is called Friction Technique and can be divided into finger friction and palm friction.

Effect:

It is mainly used for stomach distension, indigestion, diarrhea, constipation, cough, asthma, irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, impotence, seminal emission, trauma, and swelling pain, etc.

5. Scrapping Technique

It uses the fingers or palms to stick to a certain part of the body and make fast back and forth movements to create friction and heat. This technique is called Scrapping Technique.

Effect:

Scrapping Technique is mainly used for respiratory, digestive, and musculoskeletal diseases, such as cough, asthma, chest tightness, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, chronic gastritis, indigestion, female infertility, impotence, limb injury, soft tissue pain, rheumatism, etc.


6. Pushing Technique

It uses fingers, palms, fists, or elbows to exert force on a certain part of the body or acupoints and make a unidirectional straight line or arc movement. This technique is called Pushing Technique. Pushing Technique is mainly done in a unidirectional straight line, also known as Flat Pushing Technique.

Effect:

It is mainly used for hypertension, headaches, dizziness, insomnia, lower back and leg pain, stiff lower back, rheumatism, numbness, chest tightness, irritability, abdominal distension, constipation, food accumulation, soft tissue damage, local swelling and pain, etc.

7. Rubbing Technique

It uses both hands to hold the limbs or exert force on the treatment area with one or both palms, and makes alternating or back and forth rubbing movements. This technique is called Rubbing Technique, which includes grasping rubbing and pushing rubbing.

Effect:

It is mainly used for limb pain, joint mobility problems, etc.
