The Drawbacks of Eating Cherries: Who Should Avoid Them

  In summer, it is the season for cherry production. Cherry is a colorful fruit with bright red and plump appearance, which tempts everyone. Cherry is visually appealing and has a sweet and sour taste, making it a delightful treat for both the eyes and taste buds. However, eating too many cherries can be harmful to the body. Today, I will introduce the disadvantages of eating cherries and who should avoid eating them.

 


 

1. People with respiratory diseases such as asthma

  Cherries are warm in nature and are considered a hot food. Therefore, people with high body heat or respiratory diseases such as asthma should not eat cherries excessively. This is especially important for children, as they generally have a hot constitution and should consume cherries in moderation.
 

2. People with high body heat, ulcers, and diabetes

  Excessive consumption of cherries can cause heatiness, so it is best for people with high body heat, ulcers, and diabetes to avoid eating cherries.
 

3. Patients with kidney disease should be cautious

  Cherries have a high potassium content, with 258 milligrams per 100 grams. This is not a small number for patients with kidney disease. If the kidneys of patients with kidney disease lose their ability to regulate water and electrolytes, they may experience oliguria and edema. During oliguria, the reduced potassium excretion can lead to potassium retention if the patient consumes too many cherries, resulting in high blood potassium levels.
 

  Cherry pits contain certain toxins. There is a substance called cyanogenic glycoside in cherry pits, which can produce hydrocyanic acid if hydrolyzed. Consumption of cherry pits can lead to poisoning. Ancient medical books also mentioned the negative effects of overeating cherries, such as vomiting and darkening of the wind. While cherries are tempting with their color and taste, we should also recognize the benefits and drawbacks of eating cherries in order to consume them safely and correctly. By enjoying the deliciousness and nutrition of cherries while avoiding the unhealthy impacts of incorrect consumption, we can fully appreciate the beauty of cherries.
