Four Preventions for Autumn Exercise: Injury, Colds, Excess, and Dryness

December 15, 2023

With the cool and refreshing autumn weather, if you persist in appropriate physical exercise, not only can you regulate your mind and nourish your lungs, but also improve the function of internal organs. It is also beneficial for enhancing the immune function of various tissues and organs and the body's ability to resist external cold stimuli. However, due to the large temperature difference between morning and evening in autumn and the dry climate, in order to achieve good fitness effects, attention should be paid to the "four preventions" during exercise.

     1. Prevent sports injuries

Because the muscles and ligaments of the human body will reflexively cause vasoconstriction, reduced flexibility, decreased joint range of motion, and decreased neural command ability of muscles under low temperature conditions, if you do not adequately prepare before exercise, it may cause ligament strains and muscle strains. The duration and content of preparation activities may vary from person to person, generally achieving a warm-up effect is appropriate.

     2. Prevent colds caused by cold exposure

The temperature is low in the early morning of autumn, so you should not wear single-layer clothing for outdoor activities. You should increase or decrease clothes according to changes in outdoor temperature. It is not advisable to take off too much at once during exercise. You should wait until your body heats up before taking off excessive clothes. After exercise, avoid wearing sweaty clothes in the cold wind to prevent the body from catching a cold.

     3. Prevent excessive exercise

Autumn is a good season for exercise, but at this time, the human body's yin essence and yang qi are in a period of contraction and nourishment. Therefore, exercise should also follow this principle, that is, the amount of exercise should not be too large to prevent excessive sweating and loss of yang qi. It is advisable to choose light and gentle exercises with moderate intensity.

     4. Prevent dryness and injury to body fluids

Autumn is the season when liver qi is dominant. The dry climate and low temperature can easily cause symptoms such as dry throat, lack of saliva, dry lips, nosebleeds, and constipation. For exercisers, after exercise, they should eat more foods that nourish yin, moisten the lungs, and replenish fluids, such as pears, sesame seeds, honey, and tremella mushrooms.

After exercise, it is also important to drink plenty of water and eat more sugarcane, pears, apples, dairy products, sesame seeds, fresh vegetables, and other foods to maintain normal secretion of the upper respiratory tract mucosa and prevent throat inflammation. If excessive sweating occurs during exercise, a small amount of salt can be added to the water to maintain the acid-base balance in the body, prevent muscle cramps, and follow the principle of drinking a small amount of water multiple times. In addition, if you are engaged in long-distance running exercises, you should also drink an appropriate amount of sugar water to prevent hypoglycemia and adverse physiological reactions such as dizziness, profuse sweating, and limb weakness.
