Heel Pain in Middle-Aged and Elderly: Soaking Feet in Chinese Medicine for Relief

December 8, 2023

Some middle-aged and elderly people often experience heel pain, mostly due to the growth of bone spurs on the soles of their feet, medically known as osteophytes. Soaking the feet in Chinese medicine and rice vinegar is a good treatment method.

The ingredients needed are Weilingxian, Chuanxiong, and millet vinegar. After grinding the Weilingxian and Chuanxiong, put them together with millet vinegar in a pot, add 1000 milliliters of water, and simmer for 5-10 minutes. Then pour it into a basin and soak the affected area of the heel spur (control the water temperature to prevent scalding). Do this 1-2 times a day for a period of 10 days. Weilingxian and Chuanxiong are Chinese herbal medicines (available at pharmacies) that have the functions of promoting blood circulation, resolving stasis, and promoting meridian circulation. Millet vinegar has the effect of reducing swelling and softening bone spur tissues.

During the treatment, preventive measures should be taken.

First, reduce the amount of foot activity;

Second, wear soft-soled and thick-soled shoes, use silicone heel pads, and also carve a hole in the area of the long bone spur on the shoe pad to prevent pressure and pain when walking;

Third, avoid closing treatment easily to prevent covering up the symptoms with excessive sealing.
