The Adverse Effects of Excessive TV Watching on Older Adults' Health

December 5, 2023

One, do not watch TV immediately after meals.

After a meal, all the digestive organs in the body require a large amount of blood supply, and the blood supply to the digestive organs will relatively decrease, which hinders the digestion of food.

Two, do not watch TV for a long time.

Older people who sit and watch TV for a long time are prone to a condition called "TV leg disease". The circulation of blood slows down in older people, and sitting for a long time can cause numbness, pain, and swelling in the lower limbs. In addition, staring at a flickering screen and moving images for a long time can cause symptoms such as eye irritation, dizziness, headache, and fatigue. Therefore, older people should close their eyes and rest or do eye socket massages after watching TV for half an hour, and occasionally stand up and move around.

Three, do not watch intense competitions and thrilling plots.

Rapid emotional fluctuations are factors that can trigger diseases in older people with cardiovascular problems. Excessive tension and excitement can stimulate the sympathetic nervous system in the body, increase the secretion of norepinephrine and adrenaline, accelerate heart rate, cause blood vessel constriction, and cause a sudden increase in blood pressure. This can lead to cerebral hemorrhage and stroke in patients with hypertension and arteriosclerosis, and patients with coronary heart disease may experience angina due to myocardial ischemia, or even myocardial infarction.

Therefore, it is best for older people not to watch various intense TV programs or other thrilling shows.
