Winter Remedies: Tapping Zusanli Acupoint for Warmth and Well-being

November 30, 2023

When winter comes, many people, especially the elderly, often experience cold hands and feet. This is because the hands and feet are far away from the heart, and individuals with poor peripheral blood circulation are more likely to experience inadequate blood supply, resulting in cold extremities.

Zusanli acupoint is located on the outer side of the lower leg, four fingers' width below the knee joint (excluding the thumb, approximately three inches below the knee joint). In cold weather during winter, tapping or massaging this acupoint regularly can have the same effect as acupuncture. It not only promotes microcirculation, improves cold symptoms, but also has the functions of strengthening the stomach, relieving fatigue, and enhancing immune function. Therefore, there is a saying in folk medicine that "tapping Zusanli acupoint is better than eating a mother hen."

Before tapping or massaging, rub your hands together until they feel warm. Then, use your palms to massage the Zusanli acupoint on both sides for about 15 minutes, or tap it about 150 times, once in the morning and once in the evening. There are also other methods to improve the symptoms of cold hands and feet in daily life, such as increasing exercise, such as running, brisk walking, and shaking hands; adopting foot soaking and hand and foot rubbing as part of healthcare therapy before going to bed; and choosing to consume less cold-natured foods in the diet, and selecting more warm or hot-natured foods such as mutton and dog meat.
