Protecting Pregnant Women: Mitigating the Risks of Respiratory Diseases in Smoggy Environments

January 30, 2024

Recently, the number of respiratory diseases due to smog has increased dramatically, and pregnant women with weak immune systems have become "high-risk areas".

In smoggy weather, the air circulation is poor, and the fog contains various harmful substances such as sulfides and nitrides, which have strong cytotoxic effects. They invade the respiratory system through human breathing and directly damage the trachea, bronchi, and lung tissue. They are easily infected by viruses outdoors, which not only damages the respiratory tract but also stimulates the skin and eyes, causing symptoms and diseases such as cough, nasal congestion, nosebleeds, chronic rhinitis, allergic rhinitis, and chronic pharyngitis.

In smoggy weather, the air circulation is poor, and the blood pressure of some pregnant women may increase, causing restlessness, especially for pregnant women who already have hypertension before pregnancy, they are more likely to develop preeclampsia or pre-eclampsia. At the same time, smoggy weather can easily cause intrauterine hypoxia, which can lead to increased fetal movement. Prolonged exposure to this type of weather can cause many pregnant women to experience symptoms of depression, excessive emotional tension, extreme fatigue, and excessive pressure on the abdomen, leading to restless and intense fetal activity. Maternal depression should be taken seriously by family members and should be observed and guided.

If pregnant women live in a severely polluted environment for a long time, it not only affects the intellectual development of the fetus but may also lead to fetal deformities or miscarriage, increasing the risk of fetal heart disease and other diseases. Therefore, pregnant women should reduce their outdoor activities during smoggy days, especially avoid staying outdoors from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. and from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. When encountering smoggy days, it is best to stay at home. If you must go out, it is advisable to wear a mask to prevent dust from entering the nasal cavity. Choose products from reputable manufacturers and wash and disinfect them with boiling water every day.

Indoors, pregnant mothers should eat more fresh vegetables and fruits, which can moisturize the lungs, remove dryness, relieve phlegm, cough, invigorate the spleen, and nourish the kidneys. They should eat less irritating foods. Pay attention to timely replenishing water, drink more water, and keep the respiratory mucosa moist. Pay attention to personal hygiene, change and wash clothes frequently, especially when coming back from outside. Clothes may have more dust and small particles, so it is best to wash them to prevent the growth of bacteria and infection with various viruses. Long-term stay at home may make pregnant mothers feel depressed, so find something that makes you happy. Indoor stretching exercises can also be done to maintain physical health and increase immunity.
