Safe Swimming Tips for Expectant Mothers: Ensuring a Healthy Exercise Routine

December 5, 2023

Swimming is one of the suitable exercises for expectant mothers. However, expectant mothers should still take precautions and prioritize safety when swimming.

1. Prepare a pair of non-slip slippers. Whether before entering the water or after leaving the water, it is important to wear non-slip slippers to prevent accidental slips.

2. Opt for an outdoor pool if possible. Some pools are disinfected with chlorine, which can cause discomfort to the respiratory system of expectant mothers. Therefore, it is best to choose an outdoor pool to minimize irritation. Alternatively, choose a pool that uses ozone for sterilization and filtration.

3. Don't forget to bring water or juice. It is important to carry water or juice and replenish fluids before and during swimming to avoid dehydration.

4. Avoid excessive stretching and diving. In water, the buoyancy can make it difficult to sense the extent of limb and joint stretching. Expectant mothers should be especially cautious to avoid excessive stretching that may have adverse effects on their bodies and the fetus. It is also important to refrain from holding your breath and diving, as oxygen deprivation can be particularly harmful to the fetus.

5. The water temperature in the pool should ideally be around 30°C. At this temperature, muscles are less likely to cramp and fatigue is reduced. Expectant mothers should particularly avoid swimming in water that is warmer than body temperature, as it can raise body temperature and potentially affect the health of the fetus.
