Effective Oral Traditional Chinese Medicine for Postoperative Recovery in Cesarean Section

January 26, 2024

In recent years, there has been an increasing number of women undergoing cesarean section due to the rise in giant babies and advanced maternal age. In order to promote early postoperative bowel movement and prevent intestinal adhesions, as well as reduce complications, the administration of oral traditional Chinese medicine has shown significant effects.

Basic formula: 15g of Taizishen, Tianhuafen, Maidong, and Huangjing each, 10g of Xiangfu, Chuanpou, and Yuanhu each, and 6g of Chenpi (added later), and 10g of Dahuang. Boil twice with water, combine well, and take one dose per day, divided into two servings. The first serving is taken 6 hours after the operation, and if there is no anal gas after 24 hours, another dose is taken. The observation results of 240 cases of primiparous women showed that taking this formula after the operation can promote early anal gas discharge and faster recovery of intestinal peristalsis. Moreover, there is no need for analgesics after the anesthesia effect wears off, while the control group showed significant differences in these two aspects compared to the observation group.

During the process of childbirth, due to uterine contractions, women often shout loudly, causing excessive air to enter the gastrointestinal tract and causing abdominal bloating. After the operation, abdominal incision pain affects early activity, making it easy to cause abdominal distension and delayed recovery of intestinal peristalsis. In addition, postoperative sweating and a certain amount of bleeding during and after the surgery can lead to insufficient yin and blood. Taizishen, Tianhuafen, Maidong, and Huangjing in the formula have the functions of nourishing yin, generating body fluids, and replenishing blood; Xiangfu, Chuanpou, Chenpi, and Dahuang have the function of promoting qi circulation, relieving stagnation, reducing bloating, and relieving pain. The combination of these herbs can nourish yin, generate body fluids, replenish blood to treat the root cause, promote qi circulation, reduce bloating, and relieve pain to treat the symptoms. Therefore, the prescription is consistent with the symptoms, resulting in better therapeutic effects.
