Precautions for Pregnant Women's Bathing: Water Temperature, Timing, and Posture

December 18, 2023

During pregnancy, bathing for pregnant women must pay attention to methods and techniques. Although pregnant women need bathing more than ordinary people to keep their skin clean and prevent skin and urinary tract infections, if the methods are not paid attention to during bathing, it may have an impact on the health of the mother and the fetus. For the fetus, some of them may even cause permanent damage.

Strict restrictions on water temperature

According to modern medical research, high temperatures can damage the fetal central nervous system. The higher the water temperature and the longer the duration, the more serious the damage. Therefore, the water temperature should be controlled below 38°C. In addition, pregnant women should try to avoid bathing in warm water pools to prevent hot water from immersing the abdomen. According to clinical measurements, when the body temperature of pregnant women rises by 2°C, it will cause the fetal brain cells to stagnate in development. If it rises by 3°C, there is a possibility of killing brain cells, and the brain cell damage caused by this is mostly irreversible and permanent, such as the possibility of fetal malformation or intellectual disability after birth.

The timing of bathing should be considered

When pregnant women take a hot bath, the time should be controlled within 20 minutes. Due to the gradual decrease of air in the bathroom or bath cover and the relatively high temperature, there is insufficient oxygen supply. Pregnant women bathing in it will soon experience dizziness, blurred vision, fatigue, chest tightness and other symptoms. In addition, the stimulation of hot water bathing will cause the capillaries on the entire body surface to dilate, leading to insufficient blood supply to the pregnant woman's brain. At this time, the fetus may also experience hypoxia, increased fetal heart rate, and even adverse effects on the development of the fetal nervous system.

The posture of bathing should be scientific

After pregnancy, the endocrine function of women's body will undergo various changes, and the acid secretion in the vagina with sterilization effect will decrease, and the natural defense function in the body will decrease. If the sitting bath method is used, bacteria and viruses in the water are likely to enter the vagina and uterus, causing vaginitis, salpingitis and other diseases, or causing urinary tract infections. The occurrence of these diseases will inevitably increase the opportunity for medication during pregnancy, and medication may pose a hidden danger to the health of the fetus. Therefore, during the bathing process, attention must be paid to the above posture.
