Preparing for a Second Child: How Traditional Chinese Medicine Can Help

December 13, 2023

Starting from 2016, China has fully implemented the policy of allowing couples to have a second child, which is undoubtedly good news for many families who want to have a second child. Recently, an online survey showed that 30% of eligible families in China currently want to have a second child.

Although the policy has been relaxed, there is a problem for families who have missed the optimal childbearing age: how to better prepare for a second child? Generally speaking, the best childbearing age for women is before the age of 30. After this age, the eggs will age and the chromosomes in the eggs will deteriorate. For men, the best childbearing age is before the age of 35. After this age, the quantity and motility of sperm will decrease. Therefore, it is not easy for couples of advanced age to have a second child. If they are unable to conceive, it may be due to a decline in reproductive function caused by age. From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, kidney tonification and regulation should be considered to replenish kidney energy.

No matter your age, there are generally four basic conditions for pregnancy:

1. Having mature eggs and being able to ovulate normally;

2. Having sufficient and normal sperm;

3. Having unobstructed and fully functional fallopian tubes;

4. Having a normal-sized uterus and endometrium. In other words, in order to have a good "seedling", you must have a good "seed" and a good "land".

For women over the age of 35 who want to have a second child, more than half of the cases seen in daily consultations are related to spleen and kidney deficiency and uterine coldness. Experts say, "This constitution is characterized by uterine coldness, which is equivalent to infertile soil. There are two main reasons: one is that as women age, the number and quality of eggs decrease, and the other is related to unhealthy lifestyles and environmental changes."

Causes of uterine coldness:

1. Vanity

Most cases of uterine coldness in women are caused by vanity when they were young. Wearing revealing clothes, such as exposing the waist and belly button, makes it easy for cold air to enter the body.

2. Eating cold foods during menstruation and pregnancy

These foods are not suitable to be consumed during menstruation, and especially during pregnancy. Some women eat whatever they want before and during pregnancy without paying much attention to it. As a result, the child often develops eczema. This is the result of eating cold foods during menstruation and pregnancy. Regular consumption of cold foods can cause coldness to accumulate in the body, making it difficult to expel the invading coldness.

Moreover, illnesses can be deep or shallow, and the coldness hidden deep in the internal organs needs to be forced out through the meridians and channels before reaching the surface. This is a process that takes time. Therefore, it is impossible to cure a disease that has accumulated for ten years in just a few days.

3. Gynecological inflammation and abortions

Gynecological inflammation and abortions can cause damage to the uterus, leading to an uneven uterine lining, creating opportunities for cold pathogens to invade. If uterine coldness is not promptly repaired, it will become more severe, leading to worsened menstrual cramps, difficult-to-cure inflammation, and sexual frigidity. Even if pregnancy occurs, it is easy to have a miscarriage.

If older mothers who want to have a second child experience lower back pain and abdominal pain, early or delayed periods by 7 days, incomplete menstrual flow, feeling cold or presence of blood clots during menstruation, it is likely related to spleen and kidney deficiency. It is best to seek medical attention in a timely manner. "Many women often sit in the office for a long time without moving, which, from the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, can damage the qi and eventually lead to spleen and kidney deficiency, affecting the quality of eggs. For mothers over 40 who want to have a second child, it is recommended to undergo examinations and physical assessments before pregnancy."

Finding the right time for intercourse:

The temperature of the environment one month before the fertilized egg is formed, that is, the temperature of the environment in which the man and woman are in before having sexual intercourse, is an important factor affecting the gender of the baby. A high-temperature environment is more likely to create male babies, while a low-temperature environment is more likely to create female babies. High temperatures can affect the X chromosome of sperm, making it difficult for female babies to be born; low temperatures can affect the Y chromosome of sperm, making it difficult for male babies to be born. Therefore, if you want to have a boy, it is best to conceive in summer, and if you want to have a girl, try to conceive in winter.

Pay attention to sexual positions:

Pay attention to the position during intercourse. Use positions that are more likely to bring the woman to orgasm. The position should be deep. It is said that during orgasm, the woman's vagina becomes alkaline, which is beneficial for conceiving a boy.

Abstinence when necessary:

Abstain from sex for 3-5 days. This will increase the number of sperm. Of course, it is not absolute. There are also cases where couples have sex every day and still conceive a boy. The key is the condition of the husband's sperm. I am more conservative, so I abstained for 5 days. However, abstinence for too long will reduce sperm vitality. It is best to find a balance.

Traditional Chinese medicine believes that "the kidneys govern reproduction", and the reproductive abilities of men and women are determined by the abundance or deficiency of kidney essence. If the kidney essence is abundant, the reproductive abilities will be strong; if the kidney essence is deficient, the reproductive abilities will decline. The classic Chinese medicine book "Huangdi Neijing" says, "With abundant kidney essence, ... yin and yang harmonize, thus being able to have children." This is the principle of using kidney tonification to assist reproduction! There are many types of kidney tonifying herbs in Chinese medicine, but which type of kidney tonifying herbs is more suitable for kidney tonification and fertility? Generally speaking, kidney tonifying Chinese patent medicines that contain two types of herbs have the effect of tonifying the kidneys and assisting fertility. One type is seed herbs, and the other type is animal-based herbs.

Seed herbs: These are plant seed medicines, such as goji berries, dodder seeds, schisandra berries, raspberry seeds, cuscuta seeds, garlic chives seeds, evodia fruit, etc. Seed herbs are plant seeds. When a seed is planted in the ground, it can take root and sprout. It can grow into a towering tree once it breaks through the soil. This is the power of seeds. Based on the principle of analogy, traditional Chinese medicine proposes the theory of "seeds can tonify essence" and "tonify seeds with seeds". Using seed herbs to tonify the kidneys and assist fertility, the Ming Dynasty Chinese medicine book "Bencao Zhengyi" says, "All seeds are firm and solid, tonifying the yin of the five organs and supplementing essence and energy. All seeds are heavy, tonifying and strengthening the kidneys and strengthening the kidney energy, enhancing willpower and doubling strength to have children." It points out the profound principle of using seed herbs to tonify the kidneys and assist fertility. Modern pharmacological research has found that seed herbs are rich in plant hormones, plant estrogens, lecithin, and other natural ingredients that promote reproductive ability.

Animal-based herbs: Traditional Chinese medicine refers to animal-based herbs as "blood and flesh with emotion" and believes that "emotional beings add essence". They are the most powerful herbs for tonifying the kidneys. There are many animal-based herbs, but the most suitable one for kidney tonification and fertility is deer antler. Deer antler is one of the three major tonifying herbs in traditional Chinese medicine. "Compendium of Materia Medica" records that deer antler has the effect of "nourishing essence and marrow, nourishing blood, and supplementing yang". Modern research has found that deer antler contains male hormones, follicle-stimulating hormones, and can promote male and female reproductive abilities. In addition to land-based animal-based herbs, there are also marine organisms that can be used as medicine. They have a good effect on tonifying the kidneys and are commonly used traditional Chinese medicines for kidney tonification and fertility, such as seahorses, which can treat "kidney deficiency and impotence, cold uterus and infertility".

If a kidney-tonifying Chinese patent medicine is recommended, there is a medicine available on the market, the "Bazi Kidney Tonic Capsules" developed by Yiling Pharmaceutical Group. Compared to other kidney-tonifying medicines, this medicine has the advantage of using eight types of kidney-tonifying seed herbs as the main ingredients, and it also contains kidney-tonifying animal-based herbs such as deer antler and seahorse, which other kidney-tonifying medicines do not have.

The "Bazi Kidney Tonic Capsules" formula not only includes seed herbs for kidney tonification and nourishing essence but also includes animal-based herbs for kidney tonification and nourishing essence. Therefore, it has a stronger kidney-tonifying and fertility-assisting effect. For couples of advanced age who want to have a second child and have a decline in reproductive ability but still want to have a child, it is important not to put too much pressure on themselves. They should insist on using the "Bazi Kidney Tonic Capsules" which have the kidney-tonifying and fertility-assisting effect to regulate their bodies. Traditional Chinese medicine kidney tonification is harmless to the body, as it can replenish kidney essence and promote reproductive function. With this kidney-tonifying foundation, combined with harmonious and regular sexual life between the couple, and grasping the physiological cycle, the chances of conception will be greatly increased.

Tonify the kidneys and replenish essence, and may all couples in the world achieve their dream of having children!
