There are many customs and taboos in the traditional Chinese postpartum confinement period, such as not taking baths, not eating cold foods like fruits, and not brushing teeth. Are these practices reasonable?
The older generation always says that during the postpartum confinement period, one should not wash their hair or take baths. However, this understanding is somewhat one-sided.
During the postpartum period, there is increased vaginal discharge. Cleaning the external genitalia with warm water and changing sanitary pads regularly can maintain cleanliness and dryness, reducing the risk of infection. After giving birth, due to deficiency of qi and blood, the body's resistance is weakened, making it more susceptible to external pathogens. Therefore, when washing hair, warm water should be used, and the hair should be dried promptly. It is generally safe to take baths and wash hair one week after delivery, but it is important to avoid submerging the reproductive tract in water to prevent infection. Showers can be taken after 6 weeks.
Not brushing teeth during the postpartum period is also unreasonable. Neglecting oral hygiene during this time can lead to infected gums, bleeding, and other oral diseases. Mothers should brush their teeth once or twice a day using a soft toothbrush. After eating, rinsing the mouth with warm water is recommended. As long as the mother's physical condition allows, she should start brushing her teeth on the second day after delivery, and it is best not to exceed 3 days. Calcium supplementation should also be emphasized to prevent damage to the teeth.
Due to postpartum weakness, sensitivity to cold stimuli is increased. Therefore, brushing teeth with warm water is necessary to prevent excessive stimulation to the teeth and gums. In the first 3 days after delivery, finger rinsing can be done by cleaning the index finger or wrapping it with gauze, applying toothpaste to the finger, and using it to brush the teeth back and forth and massage the gums. This method can promote blood circulation, strengthen the teeth, and prevent tooth looseness.
Fruits and vegetables can be consumed during the postpartum period, but due to postpartum weakness and weakened gastrointestinal function, it is advisable to start with small amounts of fruits and gradually increase the intake. It is also important to avoid eating raw and cold vegetables and fruits.
