Postpartum Physical Discomfort: Remedies for Weakness, Sweating, Breast Pain, and Constipation

November 30, 2023

Physical Weakness

Physical weakness is the most common discomfort symptom after childbirth. Excessive blood loss, exertion, pain, and trauma during delivery can deplete the energy, blood, and body fluids of new mothers, causing them to feel extremely weak even if they had good health before.

Remedy: Traditional Chinese medicinal diet can help new mothers recover quickly. Under the guidance of a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner, herbs such as Codonopsis pilosula, Astragalus membranaceus, Angelica sinensis, Ophiopogon japonicus, Lycium barbarum, Dioscorea opposita, longan, walnut kernels, black sesame seeds, and lotus seeds can be used to make porridge or soup.

Excessive Sweating

Due to the need to eliminate accumulated body fluids after childbirth, it is normal for new mothers to sweat. However, if excessive sweating occurs, accompanied by dry mouth and tongue or if sweating continues for more than a week, it indicates that the body's energy is deficient and unable to retain surface moisture.

Remedy: You can take Yupingfeng San (powder or pill) or drink Fu Xiaomai Yangdu Soup. For the soup, take 50g of Fu Xiaomai and wrap it in gauze, slice 200g of lamb's stomach, boil them together, and drink the soup and eat the lamb's stomach to achieve certain effects.

Breast Swelling and Pain

Many new mothers experience acute mastitis. Symptoms include breast swelling and pain, blocked milk flow, fever, and feeling cold. If left untreated, it can develop into breast abscess, which eventually bursts and releases pus.

Remedy: You can use a wooden comb to gently massage the back from the surrounding area of the breasts towards the nipples. You can also apply Ruyi Jinhuang San and rice vinegar on the breasts, changing the application as needed. Another option is to crush prickly pear cactus without thorns, and apply the paste on the breasts 2-3 times a day. You can also consume herbal porridge by boiling 60g of dandelion and 30g of honeysuckle in water, then adding 100-150g of glutinous rice to make porridge, and drink it at any time.

Constipation and Hemorrhoids

Long-term bed rest after childbirth can easily lead to constipation and hemorrhoids. Along with the pain from the perineal tear during childbirth, many mothers feel a sense of fear when it comes to bowel movements, creating a vicious cycle of constipation.

Remedy: You can take oral Chinese herbal medicine such as Manren Runchang Wan (almond pill for bowel lubrication), or choose medicinal diet. For example, crush 5 almond kernels, 20g of peach kernels (peeled and crushed), and 20g of roasted black sesame seeds. Mix them with 50ml of honey and cook with an appropriate amount of glutinous rice to make porridge. Drink it in the morning and evening.
