Maintaining Beauty and Health: The Importance of Balance and Smoothness

November 28, 2023

How can middle-aged women maintain their beauty and health, and avoid premature aging due to mental and physical exhaustion, as well as liver and kidney deficiency? The most important thing is to learn and maintain "balance and smoothness".

From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, these cases can be roughly divided into four types: the "yellow-faced woman" type with deficiency of Qi and blood and loss of facial luster; the "acne" type with internal dampness and turbid Qi; the "insomnia" type with restless mind and unsettled liver; and the "menopause" type with deficiency of essence and blood. These are all manifestations of imbalance.

Imbalance leads to illness

These common types of endocrine disorders may seem unrelated to each other, but they actually have a common pathogenesis, which is the loss of balance and smoothness in the body according to traditional Chinese medicine. To understand "smoothness", we must first understand the various "channels" in the human body. Here, "channels" refer to pathways and passages. The common channels for women include the "Qi channel", "digestive channel", "meridian channel", "blood channel", and "menstrual channel". Under normal circumstances, these channels should remain unobstructed. If there are obstacles, various abnormal changes may occur. For example, if the "menstrual channel" is obstructed, it can lead to irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, and infertility; if the "digestive channel" is obstructed, it can cause constipation, turbid Qi affecting the face, dull complexion, and dizziness; and if the "blood channel" is obstructed, it can result in sallow complexion, dizziness, palpitations, insomnia, and hair loss.

At the same time, balance in traditional Chinese medicine is based on the balance between yin and yang, which governs the balance of Qi and blood, ascension and descent, and entry and exit. If the balance in the body is disrupted, it can lead to illness. For example, if the balance between ascension and descent is disturbed, it can cause belching, vomiting, abdominal distension, and diarrhea.

"Yellow-faced woman" due to deficiency of Qi and blood

In the past, there were many "yellow-faced women" due to malnutrition during difficult times. Nowadays, with economic development and improved living standards, why are there still a considerable number of "yellow-faced women"? The main reason is that the food intake is not fully digested, absorbed, and nourished by the spleen and stomach, resulting in the loss of facial luster and lack of radiant complexion. Skin color is determined by genetics, but whether the face is lustrous is an indicator of health, and it can be changed through diet and medicinal regulation. According to traditional Chinese medicine, women at the age of 42 will gradually become sallow and their hair will turn white due to the deficiency of Qi and blood.

Since Qi and blood begin to decline, it is necessary to take medicines that tonify Qi and blood. The most commonly used remedy is Danggui Buxue Tang, which uses Huangqi to tonify Qi and Danggui to nourish blood. You can add these two herbs when cooking soup, with 30 grams of Huangqi and 15 grams of Danggui each time. Similarly, for women with sallow complexion who are 49 years old, the focus should be on tonifying essence and blood. According to traditional Chinese medicine, women at the age of 49 will experience deficiency of liver and kidney, as well as deficiency of essence and blood. The commonly used Chinese patent medicine during perimenopause is Liuwei Dihuang Pill or Zhibai Dihuang Pill. You can also add 5 grams of Lu Rong slices, and 15 grams each of Gouqizi and Taizishen when cooking soup.

Restless mind often leads to "insomnia"

Insomnia or excessive dreaming is a common problem for women in menopausal period, causing great distress and sometimes accompanied by hair loss and depression. Insomnia and excessive dreaming can occur due to insufficient Qi and blood in the heart, or deficiency of liver and kidney essence and blood, leading to the loss of soul. When the condition of insomnia and excessive dreaming is mild, you can take Bazi Yangxin Pill under the guidance of a doctor. If the condition is severe, you should seek professional medical treatment.

Excessive dreaming often occurs along with insomnia, and the dreams are often nightmares or involve ghosts and monsters, causing great fear in patients. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that this is caused by deficiency of liver blood and the loss of soul. When seeking medical treatment, it is important to explain the content of dreams to the doctor, especially when there are dreams that are difficult to talk about, as the doctor can prescribe targeted treatment.
