The Connection Between Amenorrhea and Blood Deficiency: Nourishing Blood for Menstrual Regulation

November 28, 2023

From clinical experience, it is common for amenorrhea to be caused by blood deficiency or kidney deficiency. In daily life, you can take the Sangzhi Honghua soup: 25g of mulberry fruit, 5g of safflower, 20g of chicken blood vine, and an appropriate amount of yellow wine to make a medicinal solution for consumption.

Amenorrhea refers to the absence of menstruation in women over the age of eighteen, or if menstruation comes as scheduled but has been absent for more than three months. The causes of amenorrhea are generally kidney deficiency, blood deficiency, liver depression and qi stagnation, blood stasis caused by cold congealing, and phlegm-dampness.

Amenorrhea is mostly caused by blood deficiency and kidney deficiency

In the Ming Dynasty, Zhang Jingyue divided the causes of amenorrhea into two categories: blood-deficiency-induced amenorrhea and blood-obstruction-induced amenorrhea. Blood-deficiency-induced amenorrhea refers to the insufficient blood production due to kidney deficiency or blood deficiency, resulting in a depleted situation where there is no blood to descend, leading to amenorrhea. This is like a river irrigating trees. If the river dries up and the water source is exhausted, the downstream trees will wither due to lack of water. Blood-obstruction-induced amenorrhea means that the blood in the body is originally abundant, but due to some external factors such as constitutional obesity, phlegm-dampness accumulation, exposure to cold, or emotional disturbances, liver depression and qi stagnation occur, leading to blood circulation disorders and inability to supply menstruation. This is equivalent to building a dam in the river channel, causing the river channel to be blocked and the water flow unable to flow downward, so the downstream trees cannot be nourished.

From clinical experience, blood-deficiency-induced amenorrhea is more common. Because women are nourished by blood, women have an inherent connection with blood. Our ancestors warned us about this two thousand years ago: "Women rely on blood." A rosy complexion, beautiful skin, and shiny hair all require the moistening of blood. However, women often lose blood more easily. The different physiological processes in a woman's life, such as menstruation, pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding, are all processes that consume a significant amount of blood. Just giving birth alone can cause a large loss of blood. Therefore, it is not surprising that women experience blood deficiency and depletion.

Sangzhi Honghua soup nourishes blood and regulates menstruation

How can we nourish blood to treat amenorrhea caused by blood deficiency? It is necessary to consume more blood-nourishing foods such as gelatin, peanuts, longan, and black rice. You can also take the Sangzhi Honghua soup. Prepare 25g of mulberry fruit, 5g of safflower, 20g of chicken blood vine, and an appropriate amount of yellow wine. First, add the chicken blood vine and safflower to two bowls of water and boil to extract the juice. When there is only one bowl of water left in the pot, discard the residue and keep the juice. After cleaning the mulberry fruit, put it in the pot with an appropriate amount of water and start cooking. When the mulberry fruit is cooked and soft, pour in the medicinal juice and yellow wine, stir, and cook for another five minutes. Serve warm in the morning and evening.

Safflower has the effect of promoting blood circulation, resolving blood stasis, and regulating menstruation and nourishing blood. "Ben Cao Hui Yan" records, "For amenorrhea, nothing can regulate it except safflower." Safflower has a significant effect in treating amenorrhea, so there is no need to say more about it.

Chicken blood vine is named after its stem. If you cut its stem, a light brownish-red juice will immediately seep out, gradually turning into bright red and flowing slowly. This bright red juice looks very similar to chicken blood, so it is called chicken blood vine.

It is also a blood circulation and blood-nourishing medicine and is commonly used for blood-deficiency-induced amenorrhea, irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, anemia, rheumatic pain, numbness of tendons and bones, and other conditions. If the chicken blood vine is made into a paste, it becomes chicken blood vine paste, which has an even better blood nourishing effect.

In ancient times, mulberry fruit was already the preferred supplement for emperors. "Dian Nan Ben Cao" records that mulberry fruit can "nourish the kidneys, consolidate essence, and rejuvenate the eyes." "Sui Xi Ju Yin Shi Pu" also says, "Mulberry fruit improves hearing, brightens eyes, calms the soul, and settles the spirit." Black is related to the kidneys, and mulberry fruit is purple and black, which is beneficial for the kidneys. Nourishing the kidneys is an essential step in treating amenorrhea caused by blood deficiency. Mulberry fruit is also a kidney-nourishing fruit, so it is a targeted treatment.

For women, regular consumption of mulberry fruit can improve beauty, nourish the skin, and delay aging. Ancient people had already understood the use of mulberry fruit for making wine, which is used to nourish the liver and kidneys and treat premature graying of hair, amenorrhea, and irregular menstruation in women. However, mulberry fruit is cold in nature, so people with spleen and stomach deficiency and loose stools should not consume it.

"If menstruation is not regulated, pregnancy is impossible." Being in a state of amenorrhea for a long time can easily lead to infertility in women, so there is also the concept of "regulating menstruation for pregnancy" in traditional Chinese medicine. If amenorrhea occurs, one must not be careless and should seek timely treatment.
