Quze Acupoint: The Crooked Swamp for Clearing the Heart and Calming the Mind

March 27, 2024

The Quze acupoint receives the converging qi of the upper and lower parts of the pericardium meridian. The heat of the qi and blood reaching this acupoint begins to decline and continuously transforms into menstrual blood, exhibiting the characteristics of water's moistening and downward flow.

The menstrual blood that descends from the Tianquan acupoint still carries hot and moist water. The collision between these two types of qi and blood generates new qi and blood, similar to a tropical swamp. Therefore, it is called "Quze" (meaning "crooked swamp").

The qi and blood in the Quze acupoint come from the menstrual blood descending from the Tianquan acupoint, as well as the cold and damp water and qi from the upper part of the body and the water and dampness qi obtained from the acupoints below the elbow of the pericardium meridian. The convergence and collision of the upper and lower qi and blood form the meeting point of the pericardium meridian. In the Five Elements theory, the pericardium meridian belongs to fire, while the Quze acupoint belongs to water. Therefore, regular massage of this acupoint has the function of clearing the heart, dispelling fire, relieving vexation, and calming the mind.

If you often experience chest heat, dizziness, hypertension, coronary heart disease, or other diseases related to heat in the pericardium meridian, you can regulate them by massaging the Quze acupoint.

In addition, the Quze acupoint can also be used to treat heartache. It is recorded in the "Acupuncture Jia Yi Classic" that "When there is sudden chest pain and cough, use the Quze acupoint to treat it, and bleeding will stop it." The "Qian Jin Fang" states that the Quze acupoint is used to treat "heartache, irritability, startle, and qi reversal." The "Bronze Man" states that the Quze acupoint can "treat heart pain, relieve restlessness, relieve dryness in the mouth, qi reversal with vomiting blood, wind stroke, and trembling of the arms, elbows, and wrists." These are all experiences gained from continuous medical exploration by ancient people.

According to the "Book of Documents," it is mentioned that "wood is said to be crooked and straight." In the theory of Yin and Yang and the Five Elements, the liver belongs to wood, and the meaning of crooked and straight is that there is both flexibility and firmness. Therefore, "crooked" can be understood as the liver. The Quze acupoint is especially effective in treating liver diseases, so it has extraordinary nurturing abilities for this area and is an important acupoint for liver protection.

According to the "Ling Shu Shun Qi Yi Ri Fen Wei Si Shi," it is mentioned that "when the disease is in the stomach due to improper diet, the acupoint Quze can be used for bleeding therapy, which has the functions of opening the orifices, dispelling evils, promoting blood circulation, resolving stasis, and regulating the meridians and collaterals." In addition to these effects, long-term pressure on this acupoint also has very good therapeutic effects on vomiting, spasmodic muscle contractions, convulsions in limbs, chest heat, dizziness, and brain swelling.
