Precautions for Elderly Users of Massagers: Choosing, Using, and Timing

Precautions for the Elderly when Using Massagers

  1. Choose a suitable massager

It is recommended to choose an electric massager with a fast vibration frequency and a weak vibration intensity. Electromagnetic massagers, on the other hand, have a slower vibration frequency and a stronger vibration intensity, making them more suitable for use by middle-aged and young people.

  2. Avoid excessive use

Adjust the massage intensity and frequency gradually, starting from light to heavy and from few to many. The ideal duration for each session is around 20 minutes, with one session in the morning and one in the evening.

  3. Pay attention to the correct usage

Hold the massager with a flexible arm, avoiding gripping it too tightly. The vibrating head should not be pressed tightly against the skin. Everything should be done in a natural and comfortable manner. If any abnormal phenomena occur during use, such as vibration interruption, excessive heat, or unusual noise, stop using it immediately.

  4. Use at the right time

To avoid adverse effects, it is prohibited to use an electronic massager on an empty stomach, after a full meal, while intoxicated, or after intense exercise. Massaging during these times can further increase blood flow rate, enhance the smooth muscle peristalsis in the stomach, and result in discomfort such as nausea, vomiting, and chest tightness.

3 Types of Elderly People Who Should Avoid Using Massagers

  1. Elderly people with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. They are already at a higher risk of bleeding, and the use of massagers can further increase the risk due to the accelerated blood flow rate. These individuals, especially, should avoid massaging areas with concentrated blood vessels, such as the neck, as it may stimulate the carotid sinus, leading to a sudden drop in blood pressure and slow heart rate.

  2. Elderly people with cervical and lumbar spondylosis. Improper use of massagers can result in joint dislocation and worsen the condition.

  3. Elderly people with surgical conditions such as tumors or abscesses should avoid using massagers. The stimulation of massagers on the body surface can cause vasodilation, increase local blood flow, and potentially worsen the condition by facilitating the spread of the disease.

Warm reminder from Dr. Caring: Due to the degeneration of bodily functions, the elderly have a lower tolerance to external stimulation. Therefore, it is crucial to avoid excessive intensity and duration when using massagers, especially for those with poor physical conditions.
