Causes of Diarrhea

1. Bacterial Infection

People may develop enteritis or dysentery with varying degrees of abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, urgency, and fever after consuming food contaminated with bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella, or drinking beverages contaminated with bacteria.

2. Viral Infection

Infection with various viruses through food or other means can easily cause viral diarrhea, which is characterized by abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, fever, and general discomfort.

3. Food Poisoning

Consuming food contaminated with bacteria and their toxins, or eating undercooked beans and other foods can cause acute toxic diseases. Symptoms usually include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever.

4. Overconsumption of Cold Food

In hot weather, many people like to eat cold food and drink cold beer, which can disrupt the function of the stomach and intestines, accelerate peristalsis, and cause diarrhea.

5. Poor Digestion

Irregular eating, excessive food intake, and consumption of hard-to-digest foods in the summer, or insufficient gastric motility causing food to stay in the stomach can lead to symptoms such as bloating, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, acid reflux, heartburn, and belching.

Cupping Therapy for Treating Diarrhea

The navel, known as the "Shenque Acupoint" in traditional Chinese medicine, has the effects of warming and invigorating the yang energy, invigorating the spleen and stomach, strengthening the body, expelling diseases, and promoting longevity. It is widely used in the treatment of various diseases.

1. Cupping

The patient lies in a supine position and a medium-sized cup with a diameter of 6cm is placed on the navel (including the positions of the Shenque Acupoint and the bilateral Tian Shu Acupoint) for cupping. Generally, cupping is done every other day or every four days, and 1-3 sessions are usually sufficient to alleviate or cure the condition.

This method is suitable for loose and frequent stools, or for pale and watery stools, or for poorly digested stools.

Acupoints and meridians are closely related to nerve endings, nerve tracts, and ganglia. This is the principle behind how navel therapy can promote the regulation of the body's nerves and fluids, thereby improving the function of tissues and organs.

2. Acupoint Selection

① Tian Shu, Guan Yuan, Zu San Li, Shang Ju Xu;

② Da Chang Yu, Xiao Chang Yu, Zu San Li, Xia Ju Xu.

Different cup sizes are selected based on the location of the acupoints. The two sets of acupoints mentioned above are alternately used for cupping therapy once a day or every other day. This method is suitable for diarrhea caused by spleen and stomach deficiency and cold.
