Alleviating Cold Hands and Feet: Acupoints and Massage Techniques

January 31, 2024

After entering autumn, the temperature drops sharply and many people feel that their hands and feet are cold. Even if they dress warmly and cover themselves thickly, they cannot find relief. So how can we alleviate the symptoms of cold hands and feet? In fact, our body has many acupoints that can help alleviate cold hands and feet. Just follow the methods below for massage.

1. Yangchi Point

Location: Yangchi Point is located above the back of our hand, right at the junction of the bones on the back of the hand. Lift the back of your hand as much as possible, and you will see some folds on the wrist. Press on the folds on the side closer to the back of the hand, and you will find a tender spot in the center. That spot is the Yangchi Point.

Method: Stimulating Yangchi Point should be done slowly and with a long duration. Use the middle finger of one hand to press on the Yangchi Point of the other hand, and then switch to using the middle finger of the other hand to press on the Yangchi Point of the first hand.

Benefits: Cold hands and feet may be caused by deficiency of qi, stagnation of qi, or insufficient yang qi, which is known as "yang deficiency" in traditional Chinese medicine. Yangchi Point is an important acupoint that regulates blood circulation and hormone secretion in the whole body. Massaging this point can promote blood circulation and warm the body.

2. Yongquan Point

Location: Located on the sole of the foot, in the depression on the anterior part of the foot when it is curled up, approximately at the intersection of the anterior 1/3 and the posterior 2/3 of the line connecting the heads of the 2nd and 3rd metatarsal bones with the heel.

Method: Rub the Yongquan Point quickly with your palm until you feel a warm sensation. Rub the Yongquan Point 100 times in the morning and evening, and then rub each toe 100 times. Women with cold hands and feet should massage this point before going to bed every night, and persisting in doing so can effectively improve the condition. The effect is even better when massaging this point during a foot bath in hot water.

Benefits: Cold hands and feet are caused by insufficient yang qi. Yongquan Point is the starting point of the kidney meridian. Stimulating Yongquan Point is beneficial for nourishing the kidney, strengthening yang qi, and promoting muscle and bone health. Consistent massage of this point can alleviate the symptoms of cold hands and feet. It can also treat insomnia, hypertension, and other symptoms.

3. Dazhui Point

Location: When you lower your head, you will feel the highest protruding bone at the back of your neck. Dazhui Point is located below this bone.

Method: Women with cold hands and feet can try using hot water to wash the Dazhui Point for about 10 minutes every time they take a bath, until the skin around the acupoint turns red. This has a similar effect to moxibustion. When the whole head, neck, back, and even the whole body feel hot, take a break and pay attention to keeping warm after bathing. Another method is to rub the Dazhui Point with the palms of both hands for 5-10 minutes in the morning and evening, until you feel soreness, swelling, and heat at the acupoint.

Benefits: Dazhui Point is an important acupoint for regulating the body's sensitivity to cold. Moxibustion on Dazhui Point can promote meridian circulation and dispel coldness, making it an important method for relieving the sensation of coldness throughout the body.

4. Zusanli Point

Location: Zusanli Point is located on the outer side of the lower leg, 3 inches below the kneecap, on the line connecting the head of the fibula with the outer ankle bone.

Method: You can tap Zusanli Point 100 times, twice a day.

Benefits: Zusanli Point helps to dilate the microvessels in the hands and feet, relax tendons, activate blood circulation, and improve the condition of cold hands and feet.

5. Qichong Point

Location: Qichong Point is located 5 inches below the navel, 2 inches to the inside of the midline of the front of the thigh. There is an artery pulsating below this point, which is the location of the femoral artery in the groin.

Method: When massaging, first rub the Qichong Point, and then rub the pulsating artery. Alternate between relaxation and pressure, and continue until you feel a warm flow of energy down your legs and feet.

Benefits: Qichong Point can promote blood circulation in the legs, warm the hands and feet, and is beneficial for the body.

The best food for cold hands and feet - Longan

Longan is a nourishing fruit that can calm the mind and relieve forgetfulness and insomnia. It also has a warming effect, making it particularly suitable for people with a cold constitution, who often have cold hands and feet and have difficulty falling asleep at night. However, it is best for people with excessive internal heat or a hot constitution to eat less longan. According to traditional Chinese medicine, red beans can nourish qi and blood. Boiling a soup with longan and red beans together can enhance the warming effect.
