Massage Techniques for Myopia Treatment: Nourishing the Liver and Kidneys for Improved Vision

February 4, 2024

  [Overview]

Myopia refers to the condition where distant vision is poor while near vision is normal. The occurrence of myopia is mostly related to poor reading and writing posture and habits in preschool or school-age children, as well as other factors such as sitting too close to the target, improper sitting posture, excessive or weak lighting, and excessive use of the eyes, which lead to elongation of the anterior-posterior axis of the eyeball and improper refraction, causing the convergence point of parallel light rays to fall in front of the retina. Myopia caused by prolonged spasm of the ciliary muscle and extraocular muscles due to excessive adjustment is called pseudo-myopia.

Traditional Chinese medicine refers to myopia as "being nearsighted and afraid of being farsighted." It believes that this disease is caused by insufficient innate endowment, deficiency of the liver and kidneys, inability of essence and blood to nourish the eyes, and inability of radiance to extend to distant places.

The principle of massage treatment for this disease is to nourish the liver and kidneys, promote circulation in the eye meridians, and achieve the effects of harmonizing qi and blood, relieving eye muscle fatigue, and improving vision through manual techniques. Clinical observations have shown that massage treatment has significant effects on pseudo-myopia and can also improve vision in axial myopia.
