Non-surgical Treatment Methods for Intervertebral Disc Protrusion

December 22, 2023

  Treatment Principles

  1. Reduce the pressure in the intervertebral disc, increase the pressure outside the disc, and promote the retraction of the protrusion, creating favorable conditions for the repair of the fibrous ring.

  2. Change the position of the protrusion, loosen adhesions, and relieve or reduce the compression on the nerve roots.

  3. Enhance local blood circulation and promote the damaged nerves to recover normal function.

  Treatment Methods

  1. Relieve spasms in the lower back and buttocks muscles: Use methods like massage, acupressure, kneading, tapping, pushing, bouncing, and grasping to relax the muscles in the affected side of the waist, buttocks, and lower limbs. Focus on acupressure points such as Kidney Shu, Large Intestine Shu, Jump Circle, and Wei Zhong. The whole process takes about 15-20 minutes.

  2. Oblique traction: The patient lies on the healthy side, with one hand of the doctor supporting the front shoulder of the patient, and the other elbow joint against the back hip. The patient's upper body is rotated backward as much as possible, and at the same time, the elbow that presses against the hip joint exerts force in the opposite direction.

  3. Back extension: The doctor and the patient stand back to back, with the doctor's arms tightly clasping the patient's arms, bending the waist, flexing the knees, and straightening the buttocks, allowing the patient to use their own body weight as traction to increase the width of the intervertebral space.

  4. Traction and shaking compression: The patient lies prone, and one assistant fixes the upper back of the patient with a therapeutic cloth. The doctor grips the patient's ankle joints with both hands, continuously stretches for about half a minute, and shakes the patient's waist horizontally for about ten times. Then, return to the original position, and the doctor stands on one side, with hands stacked lightly pressing on the protruding part of the intervertebral disc. Another one or two people grip the patient's ankles tightly, continue to stretch for about half a minute, and then suddenly increase the traction force. At this time, the doctor quickly presses down with both hands.
