Seated Eight Section Brocade Exercise: Traditional Massage Technique for Health and Mindfulness

December 4, 2023

The traditional seated massage method is derived from the seated Eight Section Brocade exercise. It is a traditional health preservation technique that combines massage, guidance, and visualization. On one hand, it has the effect of regulating qi and blood, enhancing the function of organs, and mobilizing muscles and bones. On the other hand, it can also cultivate one's character and promote a calm mindset.

The specific method is as follows:

(1) Close your eyes and focus your mind, grasp and concentrate your thoughts. Tap your teeth thirty-six times, and hold your hands in front of your lower abdomen.

Sit with crossed legs, keep your head upright, straighten your waist and spine, relax your neck and shoulders, slightly close your eyes, hold your hands together and place them in front of your lower abdomen, close your mouth and teeth slightly, and place your tongue against the upper palate. Adjust your breath, focus your mind on the lower abdomen, and eliminate all selfish thoughts, so as to achieve a calm and peaceful state of mind. Tap your upper and lower teeth 36 times, with a light and gentle sound. Cross your hands and hold the back of your neck, press down, and squeeze your elbows inward as much as possible. Slowly lift your head and spread your elbows outward.

(2) Resound the heavenly drum on both sides, and listen to it from twenty-four angles. Protect your chest with both hands, and sway slightly to shake the heavenly pillar.

Press the Laogong acupoint of both hands against the ear canal, place the fingers on the back of the head, with the index finger on top of the middle finger, and tap the back of the head lightly 24 times. Cross all ten fingers in front of the lower abdomen, palms facing up, lower your head, twist your neck, exhale and twist to the right, inhale and return to the lowered head position, and then exhale and turn your head to the left. Alternate between left and right, continuously repeat 24 times.

(3) Stir the saliva like a red dragon stirring water, gargle thirty-six times, let the divine saliva fill your mouth evenly, and swallow it in three mouthfuls. The dragon moves, and the tiger runs.

Press your tongue against the upper palate and move it in the mouth. When there is enough saliva in the mouth, gargle 36 times, and then swallow it in three separate times, making sure there is a distinct sound when swallowing. Visualize sending the saliva to the lower abdomen.

(4) Hold your breath and rub your hands to generate heat, massage the back to stimulate the Jingmen acupoint. Do all of this in one breath, imagining the fire burning the navel chakra.

Inhale through the nose, without exhaling, rub your hands together until they become warm. Then, starting from the upper back, massage the sides of the waist. The specific massage method is as follows: fingertips pointing downwards, with the thumb in front and the other four fingers behind. Slowly exhale while massaging, and massage each side 36 times. Sit with crossed legs, inhale through the nose, imagine the inner fire descending to the lower abdomen, burning the Dantian. Exhale slowly through the nose while visualizing, and repeat this process 9 times.

(5) Rotate the waist like a crank on both sides, extend both feet comfortably. Cross your hands and support them with empty palms, let the clear qi flow into the Baihui acupoint.

Sit with crossed legs, make a fist, bend your elbows, and rotate your elbows and shoulders clockwise using the strength of your left arm. Alternate between left and right, rotating each side 36 times. Extend both legs forward, keeping them close together. Cross your fingers, palms facing up, and raise your arms while inhaling. Stretch your arms as high as possible, stretching your waist and raising your shoulders. Palms facing downwards, place them on top of your head, and exhale.

(6) Lower your head and touch your feet frequently.

Extend both legs and arms forward, lean your body forward as much as possible, lower your head, exhale, and reach for your feet. Inhale, straighten your upper body, lean your body backward, and repeat this process 12 times.

(7) Wait for the divine saliva to arrive, gargle and swallow the saliva again, repeat this process three times. Swallow the divine saliva nine times, making a gurgling sound, and let the hundred meridians adjust and harmonize naturally.

Sit with crossed legs, slightly close your eyes, sink your breath into the lower abdomen, move your tongue in the mouth, and when there is enough saliva in the mouth, gargle 36 times, and then swallow it in three separate times, repeating this process three times.

(8) Finish the task of transporting the river cart, imagine the fire burning your body. Formerly known as the Eight Section Brocade, practice it from midnight to noon, without interruption. All illnesses turn into dust.

Sit with crossed legs, slightly close your eyes, place your hands on the Dantian, tighten your abdomen, and imagine the hot qi in the Dantian circulating within your body. The circulation route is as follows: tailbone, spine, jade pillow, top of the head, forehead, temples, cheeks, throat, heart, and Dantian.
