Traditional Chinese Medicinal Teas for Chronic Gastritis in the Elderly

Tea is an important part of traditional Chinese medicine and plays a significant role in disease prevention, treatment, and health maintenance. The various components in tea have health benefits, and when combined with medicinal herbs, the effects are even more beneficial. Below are a few traditional Chinese medicinal teas suitable for the management of chronic gastritis in the elderly.


1. Stomach Soothing Tea

Ingredients: 300g Cyperus rotundus, 180g Roasted malt, 180g Dried tangerine peel, 90g Aged wood incense, 90g Dried orange peel, 30g Licorice root.

Instructions: Grind the aged wood incense, dried orange peel, and licorice root into coarse powder. Soak the Cyperus rotundus, roasted malt, and dried tangerine peel in water, boil twice for 1 hour each time. Combine the herbal decoctions, let it sit for 6 hours, filter, and heat to concentrate into a thick paste. Add the coarse powder and mix well. Dry it in the oven or sun-dry (temperature not exceeding 50 degrees Celsius), sift through a sieve, and divide into 12g portions.

Benefits: Regulates qi and resolves stagnation.

Indications: Suitable for elderly patients with chronic gastritis of the spleen and stomach stagnation type, presenting symptoms of abdominal distension, chest discomfort, and indigestion.

Notes: Take 1 packet, twice a day, brewed with boiling water, as a substitute for regular tea.

2. Ginger Jujube Drink

Ingredients: 5-10g Fresh ginger, 5 red dates, 6g Pinellia ternata.

Instructions: Boil the above ingredients in water and drink as a substitute for tea.

Benefits: Warms the middle and harmonizes the stomach, reduces vomiting.

Indications: Suitable for elderly patients with chronic gastritis of the spleen and stomach deficiency-cold type, presenting symptoms of hidden abdominal pain, preference for warmth and pressure, and nausea and vomiting.

Notes: Avoid use in patients with a history of hemoptysis or hematemesis.


3. Jasmine Tea

Ingredients: 6g Jasmine flowers, 6g Acorus tatarinowii, 10g Green tea.

Instructions: Remove impurities from the above ingredients, grind into coarse powder, and brew with boiling water.

Benefits: Regulates qi and relieves pain.

Indications: Suitable for elderly patients with chronic gastritis presenting symptoms of abdominal distension and loss of appetite.

4. Green Peel Malt Drink

Ingredients: 30g Green tangerine peel, 10g Malted barley.

Instructions: Wash the above ingredients, boil with water over high heat, simmer for 5 minutes, and drink the juice.

Benefits: Regulates qi and soothes the liver.

Indications: Suitable for elderly patients with chronic gastritis of the liver invading the stomach type, presenting symptoms of epigastric distension, pain in the sides, and loss of appetite.

Using a combination of herbs and tea yields better results compared to using them separately. These four medicinal teas have excellent therapeutic effects on the treatment and relief of chronic gastritis in the elderly. They can be consumed regularly as a substitute for regular tea to quench thirst and treat illness.
