  Brewing and drinking tea is something that people enjoy on a daily basis. Nowadays, there are herbal teas made from traditional Chinese medicine that provide many health benefits, such as nourishing the kidneys, improving vision, and boosting immunity. However, some herbal teas can have adverse effects on the body if consumed frequently. So, which herbal teas should not be consumed frequently?

  1. Wild Chrysanthemum

 

  Wild Chrysanthemum has a slightly cold nature and a bitter-sweet taste. It can alleviate wind and improve vision, as well as clear heat and detoxify the body. However, some people may experience discomfort in the stomach, poor appetite, and intestinal rumbling after drinking Wild Chrysanthemum tea. It is not suitable for those with weak spleen and stomach or pregnant women.

 

  2. Licorice

 

  Licorice contains glycyrrhizin, which has a corticosteroid-like effect. It can promote water and sodium retention and increase potassium excretion. Prolonged and excessive use of licorice can lead to edema, increased blood pressure, decreased blood potassium, and weakness in the limbs, known as pseudoaldosteronism. Patients with kidney disease should use licorice with caution.

 

  3. Pang Da Hai (Sterculia Seeds)

 

  Pang Da Hai is only suitable for hoarseness caused by wind-heat invading the throat. It is ineffective for hoarseness caused by vocal cord nodules, incomplete vocal cord closure, or excessive smoking and drinking. Drinking Pang Da Hai tea can cause side effects such as loose stools and chest tightness, especially for the elderly and those with weak spleen.

 

  4. Ginkgo Leaves

 

  Occasional consumption of Ginkgo leaf tea can cause side effects such as dizziness, headache, fatigue, dry mouth, dry tongue, chest tightness, stomach discomfort, decreased appetite, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea. People with a history of allergies should use it with caution.

 

  5. Cassia Seeds

 

  Cassia seeds have a good protective effect on the optic nerve and also have the effects of inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, contracting the uterus, reducing blood pressure, and lowering serum cholesterol. However, they can also cause diarrhea and long-term consumption is detrimental to the body.

 

  Therefore, not all herbal teas are suitable for consumption. When drinking herbal teas, it is important to consider individual constitution and be cautious of any potential health effects.
