Tea for Digestion: Chenpi, Jasmine, Roasted Hawthorn, and Chicken Gizzard

December 21, 2023

Tea culture is not unfamiliar to us. Groups of friends gather for afternoon tea, and traditional Chinese medicine sees herbal tea as a form of medicine. Different types of tea can be chosen to treat different symptoms of indigestion and stomach pain.

Chenpi Tea - Promotes digestion and soothes the stomach

Chenpi helps with digestion and phlegm elimination, making it suitable for those with bloating, poor appetite, and excessive phlegm caused by coughing.

It has a mild stimulating effect on the gastrointestinal tract, promoting the secretion of digestive fluids and enhancing appetite.

However, due to its warm and dry nature, it should be used with caution or avoided by those with qi deficiency and dryness, yin deficiency and dry cough, hemoptysis, or internal heat.

Jasmine Tea - Regulates qi and dispels cold accumulation

Jasmine tea helps regulate qi, relieve depression, eliminate impurities, and harmonize the middle.

It has an auxiliary therapeutic effect on indigestion caused by cold pathogens.

However, jasmine tea has a warm nature and should not be consumed excessively.

Roasted Hawthorn Tea - Promotes digestion and relieves stagnation

Fresh hawthorn and roasted hawthorn have different effects. Fresh hawthorn is usually used to promote blood circulation, remove stasis, and relieve pain, while roasted hawthorn is used to promote digestion and relieve stagnation.

Roasted hawthorn, with reduced acidity and increased bitterness, can be used for meat-induced stagnation, stomach distention, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and hyperlipidemia.

The taste of roasted hawthorn tea is not as good as that of fresh hawthorn. To improve the taste and enhance the therapeutic effect, you can add some brown sugar or roasted malt when consuming it.

However, it should be noted that not all food stagnation can be treated with roasted hawthorn. Roasted hawthorn only helps with digestion and does not tonify. It is not suitable for those with weak spleen and stomach, excessive stomach acid, digestive system diseases, or those taking tonics.

Since hawthorn has the function of promoting blood circulation and removing stasis, it can constrict the uterus. Therefore, pregnant women with threatened miscarriage should avoid consuming it.

Chicken Gizzard Tea - Relieves stagnation and invigorates the spleen

Chicken gizzard refers to the inner wall of the gizzard of a chicken. There are generally three types available in pharmacies: raw chicken gizzard, fried chicken gizzard, and vinegar-soaked chicken gizzard.

Raw chicken gizzard is good for relieving symptoms and dissolving stones, while vinegar-soaked chicken gizzard helps with liver and spleen function. Fried chicken gizzard can be used to promote digestion and invigorate the spleen.

Therefore, fried chicken gizzard can be used to make tea for the treatment of alcohol and food stagnation.
