Introduction to Gua Sha

Gua sha is a therapy based on the theory of traditional Chinese medicine meridians. It involves using specialized tools and techniques to repeatedly scrape and rub the surface of the patient's body, causing localized petechiae and achieving the effect of promoting blood circulation. Gua sha has a wide range of clinical applications and is suitable for both medical treatment and home health care.

Treatment Method

This therapy is a commonly used and simple treatment method with a long history. It is often used to treat diseases that occur in the summer and autumn, such as heatstroke, external pathogenic factors, and gastrointestinal diseases. Some scholars believe that gua sha is a variation of massage techniques. The "Baichi Massage Method" states: "The scraper is a medical instrument that touches and slightly exerts force on the skin." Operational Points

(1) Expose the scraping area fully and evenly apply gua sha oil or other mediums to the skin.

(2) Hold the scraping tool and start with light and slow strokes. Gradually increase the pressure and speed as the patient adapts, while considering their tolerance. It is recommended to scrape along the meridians and focus on painful points and acupoints, aiming to achieve petechiae formation.
