The Art of Scraping: Techniques, Materials, and Contraindications

April 7, 2024

Scraping is a common therapeutic method in traditional Chinese medicine and is often used as a method of health preservation in daily life. There are many techniques for scraping, and the materials of scraping boards also vary in daily life. Let me tell you about the techniques of scraping, the best material for scraping boards, and the contraindications for scraping.

1. Direct Scraping Technique

First, use a hot towel to wash the area to be scraped, then apply the corresponding scraping medium to that area, and then use a scraping tool to directly touch the patient's skin, repeatedly scraping until the surface of the skin shows scraping marks.

2. Indirect Scraping Technique

Place a thin cloth-like item on the area to be scraped, and then use a scraping tool to scrape on top of that cloth. This method is very effective in protecting the skin and is mainly used for children and the elderly.

3. Pinching Technique

According to the technique, it can be divided into clamping scraping, pulling scraping, squeezing scraping, patting scraping, and tapping rubbing.

4. Tapping and Rubbing Technique

Use the flat edge of the scraping board to scrape a large area parallel to the patient's body. Use fingers to press certain areas or acupoints of the patient and perform circular or spiral motions. This is a combination of pressing and rubbing techniques. This technique does not belong to scraping technique but belongs to massage technique. It is often used in conjunction with scraping technique in treatment and health preservation to enhance the therapeutic effect and compensate for the shortcomings of scraping therapy.

It is mainly used for the head, face, abdomen, limbs, joints, and hands and feet in scraping therapy.

5. Picking Technique

Use a needle to prick the patient's body surface to treat diseases. However, people should not try this scraping method at home easily. They must find professionals to do it, otherwise, they may harm their own bodies.

Before picking, prepare 75% alcohol, disinfectant cotton swabs, disinfected triangular needles, a needle with a sewing thread, or a 916 injection needle.

The scraper first disinfects the local skin with a cotton swab, pinches the skin and flesh with the left hand, holds the needle with the right hand, and lightly pricks and picks it outwards. Pick 3 times in each area and squeeze out the dark purple blood with both hands, repeat 5-6 times, and then wipe clean with a disinfectant cotton ball.

6. Bleeding Technique

This technique is suitable for superficial veins in the elbow fossa, popliteal fossa, and temples (this technique is difficult and should be performed by professionals). Also known as vein puncture therapy, it uses needle puncture or point bleeding at acupoints to achieve disease treatment through scraping, which is called bleeding therapy.
