Scraping for Fever Reduction: Acupoints, Order, and Precautions

April 5, 2024

Scraping is a popular way for many people to maintain their health. In traditional Chinese medicine, scraping is considered as a therapeutic method. With the onset of cold and fever season, can scraping help reduce fever? How can we scrape to reduce fever? What are the precautions for scraping? And what are the other methods to reduce fever? Let me answer these questions one by one.

How to Scrape to Reduce Fever

1. Acupoints for Scraping

1. Quchi: Located on the outer side of the elbow crease, when the elbow is flexed, it is at the midpoint of the line connecting the Pianli acupoint and the outer upper condyle of the humerus. Quchi acupoint can relieve superficial heat and dispel internal fire.

2. Fengmen: Located on the back, below the spinous process of the second thoracic vertebra, 1.5 inches to the side. It is one of the commonly used acupoints for dispelling wind and treating colds.

3. Hegu: Located on the back of the hand, at the midpoint between the first and second metacarpal bones on the radial side of the second metacarpal bone. Hegu acupoint can clear up and descend turbidity, dispel wind and relieve superficial symptoms.

4. Yintang: Located on the forehead, between the eyebrows. It can invigorate the brain, calm the mind, improve vision and treat dizziness and headache caused by fever.

5. Dazhui: Located in the middle of the depression below the spinous process of the 7th cervical vertebra. When sitting upright and looking down, you can feel two vertebrae, with the upper one being the cervical vertebra and the lower one being the thoracic vertebra. The depression between them is the location of Dazhui acupoint. Dazhui acupoint governs the body's yang energy and is commonly used to relieve fever by dispersing external pathogens.

To reduce fever through scraping, the first thing to do is to accurately locate the acupoints. If the acupoints are not accurately located, scraping will not be effective.

2. Order of Scraping

You can use the above-mentioned acupoints for scraping, or choose larger areas along the governing vessel and bladder meridians, armpits, and elbows. Start from the top and go down, applying light pressure at first and increasing it gradually until the local skin shows purplish-red sha marks.

1. Start with the back. Scrape from top to bottom on the back. First, scrape along the midline of the governing vessel on the back, then scrape the bladder meridians on both sides and the Jiaji acupoints. For the shoulder area, scrape from the neck to both sides of the shoulder peak.

2. Move to the chest area. However, if there is no cough, scraping the chest is not necessary.

3. Then move to the elbow area, knee crease area, neck area, and Yintang area.

Although there are many benefits of scraping, there are also some precautions to keep in mind. What are the specific things to do when receiving scraping treatment?

Precautions for Scraping

1. Scraping should generally be done only once. If the therapeutic effect is not satisfactory, other treatment methods should be considered.

2. The above-mentioned methods are only suitable for emergency situations. To completely reduce fever, the key is to treat the underlying cause, so patients should first go to the hospital. Especially for children with persistent high fever, poor nutritional status, and mental fatigue, immediate medical attention is necessary.
