Taking Care of Your Back: The Key to Good Health

April 3, 2024

Did you know that our back is closely related to our health? If you know how to take care of your back, you will also have good health. There are many ways to take care of your back, and one of them is scraping. It is said that regularly scraping the back can help you live to the age of 88. Let's take a look below.

In folklore, there is a saying, "Scrape the back to live to 88." Why is that? Why can scraping the back lead to longevity? Let's find out together.

Research has found that people who regularly scrape their back live to be as young as 84 and as old as 103, and they also have fewer illnesses.

The back is so effective because the first bladder meridian, which is located on the back, is connected to the five viscera and six bowels of the human body. These meridians are important acupoints where the energy of the five viscera and six bowels is transported to the waist and back. They are also the areas where wind and cold pathogens are likely to invade.

Why are these acupoints so important? It is mainly because they can sensitively reflect the functional disorders and pathologies of various organs.

The back acupoints are the main treatment for chronic and stubborn diseases. Therefore, when treating chronic and stubborn diseases, we should start from the back.

The spine must be straight because the major arteries are located behind the spine. If the spine is curved, it will compress the arteries and lead to poor health. Different locations of compression can cause different diseases.

All the acupoints on the back control the internal circulation of the organs because there are sympathetic and parasympathetic ganglia next to the spine. They are the automatic control system for controlling the blood supply to the organs.

Therefore, when the acupoints on our back are compressed, the sympathetic and parasympathetic ganglia will be deprived of blood supply, causing abnormalities in organ blood supply.

Practicing Qigong and Tai Chi both emphasize the importance of straightening the back. The spine should be straight because the muscles on both sides evenly pull it. Some people are prone to lower back pain because of an imbalance in the strength on one side, causing fatigue or atrophy, resulting in a crooked spine.

However, when the acupoints along the major arteries and the bladder meridian are affected, it will cause significant circulatory disorders and lead to visceral lesions. Since the lower back is where the Yang meridians are located, scraping the back often results in red bruising, indicating the accumulation of heat in the organs.

The Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon states, "The five viscera and six bowels emerge from the back. If you want to diagnose them, press the corresponding areas on the back. If they are painful and then relieved, it indicates the problem is in the middle."

Therefore, when the organs have pathological changes, various abnormal reaction points such as pain points, sensitive points, rashes, and nodules will appear on the corresponding "back door" acupoints.

In clinical practice, cupping and scraping are used to help the body eliminate accumulated heat and inflammation in the organs through the "back door," ensuring the normal operation of the meridians and collaterals.

Therefore, the saying "Scrape the back regularly to live to 88" makes sense.

The back has eight symptoms that can jeopardize your health. If we experience discomfort in our body, it often manifests in the lower back. The back can be seen as a holographic reflection of the entire body, and corresponding areas for the five viscera and six bowels can be found on the back. Therefore, if you want to understand your own health condition, just take a look at your back.
