Disadvantages of IUDs

April 13, 2023
The IUD is a long-lasting contraceptive of choice for many women, and it does facilitate a woman's sex life. However, the IUD is a foreign object placed in the uterus that does not belong to the body and can be harmful.

Uterine bleeding

When the IUD is placed, the endometrium will be scratched and a small amount of bleeding will occur in the short term, but usually it does not need to be treated and the bleeding will recover in a few days. In a small number of women, tissue changes occur in the endometrium after the placement of the IUD, producing local coagulation dysfunction in the endometrium, usually manifested as heavy menstruation, prolonged menstruation, irregular menstruation, dripping menstruation, increased leucorrhea mixed with blood, etc. As a result, women lose a lot of iron and become anemic, causing symptoms such as drowsiness and weakness.

Lower abdominal pain

This is because the ring is a foreign body to the human uterus, especially when the ring is large or low, the uterus will have the conditioned reflex to contract in order to expel this "foreign body", causing abdominal pain. Note: Generally speaking, the symptoms of this kind of pain will decrease or disappear after 2-3 months and will not affect the woman's health. If these symptoms persist for more than 3-6 months, it is important to seek medical attention. If treatment is not effective, the ring can be removed by a doctor and another birth control ring can be placed after a period of observation.

Abnormal pregnancy

Pregnancy with an IUD in the uterus is called pregnancy with an IUD. This is caused by the IUD being too small, the IUD being deformed, or the IUD falling out of position. In case of such a pregnancy with the IUD, abortion must be performed within 3 months and induction of labor at 4-6 months, and the IUD must be removed at the same time. Due to the stimulation of the ring in the uterus, the damage of a pregnancy with the ring is much greater than that of a normal pregnancy and may cause lifelong infertility.

Damage to Other Organs

In rare cases, improper selection of the IUD or a perforated endometrium due to a thin uterine lining allows the IUD to enter the abdominal cavity and damage other organs. Generally, the IUD may migrate to the bladder, pelvis, or mesentery, causing substantial damage to these organs.

Causes ectopic pregnancy

When the embryo implants in the fallopian tube, it cannot enter the uterus because of the IUD, leading to ectopic pregnancy. The IUD can only provide localized contraception in the uterus and cannot prevent ectopic pregnancy.

Induced infection

The irregular operation and unclear aseptic principle of the doctor during the IUD can cause uterine infection, cervicitis, endometritis, vaginitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, etc.; if sexual intercourse is not prohibited within two weeks of the IUD, it can also cause inflammatory infection and the above-mentioned diseases.
