Headaches After Yoga: Causes and Solutions

November 1, 2023

We know that practicing yoga can correct poor posture and relieve headaches caused by neck problems. However, some people report experiencing headaches after practicing yoga. So why do headaches occur after practicing yoga?

Dehydration causing headaches

Dehydration during yoga practice can lead to headaches because the lack of water causes an imbalance in body fluids. It is important to maintain adequate hydration during yoga practice. When rehydrating, it is advisable to drink small amounts of water multiple times rather than drinking a large amount quickly.

Headstand causing headaches

Headaches can occur during headstands because too much weight is concentrated on the head, causing compression on the neck and affecting blood circulation. This can result in headaches after practicing yoga.

Backbends causing headaches

Headaches immediately after or during yoga practice may be due to incorrect technique. For example, excessive backward bending of the neck and prolonged maintenance of the posture can lead to headaches.

Squatting immediately after yoga practice

Squatting immediately after yoga practice can disrupt blood circulation. Muscular rhythmic contractions stop, preventing the large amount of blood that entered the muscles from flowing back to the heart. This can cause a temporary lack of blood supply to the brain, resulting in dizziness, headaches, palpitations, shortness of breath, and pale complexion. In severe cases, it can even lead to shock and fainting.

Smoking immediately after yoga practice

Smoking immediately after yoga practice not only does not alleviate fatigue but also affects gas exchange in the alveoli of the lungs. This can lead to chest tightness, headaches, wheezing, and difficulty breathing due to insufficient oxygen supply to the body after exercise.
