Protecting Your Hair: Tips for Swimming and Hair Care

Swimming is a popular summer activity that not only helps to cool off but also provides exercise. However, few people are aware of the damage swimming can cause to hair. Let's take a closer look at this issue.

Damage from Pool Water

The water in swimming pools is treated with liquid chlorine or bleach, both of which are strong oxidizing agents. If hair is not washed promptly after swimming, it can suffer significant damage, resulting in loss of shine, yellowing, brittleness, and even breakage.

Damage from Saltwater Bathing

Sea water contains salt and tiny sand particles. Combing wet hair immediately after swimming in the sea can damage the hair strands. Moreover, salt can alter the keratin in hair strands when exposed to UV radiation, leading to dry, yellowed hair.

Using Conditioner to Protect Hair before Swimming

Before swimming, mix conditioner with water and apply it evenly to the hair. After a brief period, rinse it off. The conditioner forms a protective film on the hair, effectively shielding it from chlorine in the pool or salt in the sea.

Protecting Hair with a Swim Cap

Wearing a swim cap while swimming can partially prevent the chemical components in the water from corroding the hair. Silicone waterproof swim caps are recommended, as they tightly cover the hair, minimizing contact between the hair and pool or sea water and reducing damage to the hair strands.

Hair Care after Swimming

1. Rinse the hair with clean water immediately after coming out of the water. Apply some conditioner or hair oil to remove any residual chlorine or salt, thus preventing further damage to the hair.

2. When washing the hair, add some vinegar or lemon juice to the shampoo. This can reduce hair breakage and make the hair more flexible.

3. If the hair is excessively dry, wash it with milk and let the milk naturally dry on the hair. This can provide excellent moisturizing effects.

4. After thoroughly washing the hair, comb it and allow it to air dry whenever possible. Avoid using a hairdryer, as it can generate uneven heat distribution and potentially damage the hair.
