Causes and Solutions for Facial Flushing during Exercise

October 25, 2023

Regular exercise not only helps to keep the body fit but also helps to relieve stress. That's why many people choose to go to the gym or exercise outdoors during their leisure time. However, many people experience facial flushing during exercise. So, what causes facial flushing during exercise?

Dilation of Capillaries Causes Facial Flushing

During exercise, body temperature rises and the blood vessels in the skin are influenced by neural factors, causing them to dilate or contract. The face has a high density of capillaries, and during the process of dilation and contraction, these capillaries become congested, resulting in facial flushing.

Rupture of Capillaries Causes Facial Flushing

When the facial skin is suddenly stimulated, small capillaries are more likely to rupture. If exercising outdoors in hot weather, the capillaries in the facial skin are easily stimulated by heat, leading to ruptures and facial flushing.

Temperature Changes Cause Facial Flushing

During exercise, body temperature increases, and the dilation of blood vessels leads to facial redness. However, if the outdoor temperature drops sharply, abnormal dilation of blood vessels can also cause facial flushing. This condition is usually characterized by the appearance of numerous blood vessels on the face.

Increased Blood Circulation Causes Facial Flushing

During intense exercise, the demand for oxygen in the body's cells increases, resulting in accelerated heart rate and respiration. This, in turn, leads to faster blood circulation and increased blood output. As a result, microcirculation becomes more active, causing blood vessels, especially those in the face with a rich supply of capillaries, to dilate significantly. This leads to facial flushing.

Congestion in the Head Causes Facial Flushing

The head is close to major blood vessels and already has abundant blood supply. During exercise, with the acceleration of blood circulation, the blood supply to the face becomes even more abundant. Therefore, congestion in the head during exercise can cause facial flushing.

Thinner Stratum Corneum Causes Facial Flushing

People with thinner stratum corneum on their facial skin tend to have more sensitive skin. During exercise, when body temperature rises and blood circulation increases, their faces are more prone to flushing.

What to Do if Facial Flushing Occurs during Exercise

In general, facial flushing during exercise is a normal phenomenon and will gradually subside after exercise. However, if facial flushing is accompanied by other discomfort, it is best to seek medical advice. People who are prone to excessive facial flushing during exercise should exercise more regularly to improve their physical fitness. After exercise, it is important to protect the skin and avoid using cold water to wash the face, as it may stimulate the blood vessels.
