Why Does Skipping Rope Cause Headaches?

October 21, 2023

Many people choose skipping rope as a form of exercise to stay fit. However, some people experience headaches while skipping rope. So, why exactly does skipping rope cause headaches?

Hypoxia

Skipping rope is a relatively intense exercise. When people who are not used to physical activity suddenly engage in this vigorous exercise, their brains may not receive enough oxygen. People with poor physical fitness may find it difficult to adapt to skipping rope, and the build-up of cholesterol and other substances in the arterial walls can impede blood flow, leading to headaches during skipping rope.

Fatigue

Excessive physical exertion, poor sleep quality, and exposure to cold temperatures can also cause headaches while skipping rope. If you experience headaches while skipping rope, try adjusting your sleep schedule and reducing the number of skips to alleviate the symptoms.

Low calorie intake

If you choose to skip rope on an empty stomach, it can result in insufficient calories and low blood sugar levels. This can also lead to headaches during skipping rope. Therefore, it is advisable to consume foods that can quickly replenish energy before skipping rope, such as a banana or a cup of honey water.

Medical conditions

If you experience headaches or dizziness while skipping rope, you may have inner ear diseases, high blood pressure, sinusitis, glaucoma, anemia, or sinus inflammation.

What to do if you experience headaches while skipping rope

Nutrition supplementation

If the headaches during skipping rope are caused by hypoxia, it is important to consult a healthcare professional for medication and incorporate foods rich in protein, vitamins, and calcium into your daily diet. Examples include fish, dairy products, eggs, corn, and shellfish.

Get enough sleep

If the headaches after skipping rope are due to excessive fatigue, getting sufficient sleep can resolve the issue.

Massage

Massage can effectively alleviate headaches caused by skipping rope. Place the fingertips of both hands on the area where you feel the headache and massage the scalp in a similar manner to combing hair. The speed should be fast and the pressure should be gentle. Repeat this three times a day - in the morning, afternoon, and evening - with 100 massages each time. This can effectively relieve the headache.

Rubbing the temples

Rubbing the temples can also help relieve headaches. Press the middle fingers of both hands on the temples and rub clockwise 7-8 times, then rub counterclockwise 7-8 times. Repeat this process multiple times to alleviate the symptoms.

Seek medical attention

If skipping rope headaches are caused by an underlying medical condition, it is important not to ignore them. To avoid delaying treatment, it is best to consult a healthcare professional at a hospital.
