Causes of abdominal pain after running

September 4, 2023
I believe many people have experienced abdominal pain after running, sometimes it may be fine after resting for a while, other times it may be so painful that they sweat profusely, or even faint. So what exactly causes abdominal pain after running?

Lack of sports exercise

People who usually lack sports exercise will require much more oxygen when running than those who exercise regularly, and are prone to poor breathing, which leads to shortness of breath and chest tightness. Under normal circumstances, the negative pressure of the chest cavity will rise when inhaling, which is conducive to the return of blood to the hepatic veins and other places; while when shortness of breath occurs in running, the pressure of the chest cavity will become smaller, and the return of blood to the liver will be obstructed, making the liver stagnant and eventually leading to liver pain. This condition usually manifests as right upper abdominal pain.

Not doing warm-up exercise

Insufficient warm-up exercise before running or no warm-up exercise at all can easily cause acute thoracic rib pain. When running, the muscles will go into a tight state, but because there is no warm-up exercise, the muscles and internal organs cannot immediately move to meet the oxygen and nutrients needed when running, which will make the respiratory muscles tense and spasm, thus producing pain.

Running immediately after eating

When you start running immediately after eating, the blood will be mostly supplied to the exercise system, and the one provided to the digestive system will be reduced accordingly, and the peristaltic function of the intestines and stomach will be weakened, which will easily cause gastrointestinal dysfunction and lead to gastrointestinal spasm and abdominal pain.

Large amount of water loss

In the process of running, a lot of water and salt will be lost because of sweating, if not replenished in time, it will easily lead to disorders of water and electrolyte metabolism in the body, causing rectus abdominis muscle spasm and abdominal pain.

Too much exercise

Too much running exercise will easily produce a large amount of lactic acid accumulation, resulting in soreness in the abdominal muscles; and the blood supply to the internal organs will be reduced accordingly during running, plus the excessive running exercise will cause spasmodic contraction of the smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract, resulting in abdominal pain.

Incorrect running posture

In the process of running, incorrect posture due to incorrect foot landing, body swaying left and right, hunching and other incorrect posture may lead to abdominal muscles being damaged during exercise, thus producing pain and other discomfort.

Swallowing a lot of air causes

In the process of running, nose breathing can not meet the body's needs, it will start to breathe with the mouth, which will lead to swallowing a lot of air, making the stomach more dilated, easily lead to gastroesophageal reflux, regurgitation, nausea, which will lead to epigastric pain.

Suffering from abdominal diseases

People suffering from chronic hepatitis, gastric ulcer, chronic appendicitis and other diseases, in the process of running, the lesion is stimulated by vibration, pulling and other stimuli, will produce abdominal pain.

How to do if abdominal pain occurs after exercise

If abdominal pain occurs during running, you can slow down the running speed, adjust the pace, adjust the breathing and deepen breathing, and press with your hand; if the pain is not reduced or even aggravated, it is recommended to stop running immediately and rub the acupuncture points such as Neiguan and Sansili with your fingers, which can relieve abdominal pain. If the rectus abdominis muscle spasm, then local massage can be carried out, do back stretching action to pull and abdominal muscles. If these measures are not effective, it is necessary to promptly seek medical examination.
